Having been asked for a wacking 25% increase for renewal of my policy with Saga ("no need to do anything, it will automatically renew"), taking it to over £700, and spurred on by Martin's urgings to "haggle", I phoned and just said I was surprised. Immediately: "oh, yes, you're a valued customer. We can reduce by £70". (So why wasn't that done in the first place?). I then reduced substantially by opting for £200 excess on buildings, omitting unnecessary cover on DIY damage, and paying in one lump sum - saving some £50. I then tried RIAS (for over 50's) and got it down to £406 for the same cover!
Saga claim to match any quote for the same cover so I'm sending the RIAS quote to them for checking and await my "saving" (it's NOT really - it's the money I might have been stupid enough to GIVE them as a present!) of £300!
CONCLUSION: THEY MUST THINK WE ARE STUPID - BECAUSE SOME OF US are (INCL. ME). Thanks to Martin and his team. I will post the outcome later on. So... Get Haggling!0 -
I am in the process of renewing my building and contents insurance. I am having a difficult time making my mind up if it is worth having the cover for items away from the home, it has a £50 excess and costs £25 more. So really before I even get anything back I am paying out £75. What does anyone think, have you got this cover and is it worth it?
I'd appreciate your comments.0 -

It's time to renew my B&C cover. Last year I paid £88 and they've quoted £99 for renewal. This somehow seems too low to me? The cover is for £15000 contents and b£40000 buildings. Are these figures right??? We have a 2 bed front terrace 'up north' and are not particularly well off. Any suggestions? Thanks, Sarah x:heart2: THANK YOU MARTIN!! :heart2:0

You look very under insured, it would be well worth you reviewing your sums insured. It looks like you have selected your Insurers minimum sums insured. For instance the average home is thought to have around £40000 of contents.0

Hi guys
Got a bit of a query that I can't seem to get resolved quite how I want.
I'm very new to this B+C insurance lark as I have only had my house for one year. My policy renewal date was set at 16th May. As a result, I started looking around and found a massive saving. Obviously I took up the new quote yesturday and then went and cancelled my old policy.
I then had a brain wave and realised cancelling my policy could have meant I wasn't insured between yesturday and the 16th. When looking online at my old policy, the status was set to closed. The telephone lines with my old insurer were shut for the evening and I was worried about the apparent lack of cover. I therefore rang up my new insurer to bring the date forward. Godd stuff, all sorted (I thought).
I've just rang up my old insurer to check it the cover no longer existed, and the old policy still runs until the 15th of May. Result being I currently have two insurance policies. The new insurer won't put the date back and the old one won't stop it as of today.
They both say it is OK, but I'm concerned about the possibility of them both having liability exposure and that this may void any claims (obviously quite unlikely to need to).
The phone call was recorded and I've taken name, date and time.
My question is, does this seem OKI'm getting quite worried about this and I go on hols next week and return on the 16th
thanks in advanceMortgage started May 08 @ £144,499 for 35 yrs:eek: Must get mortgage sub £100k by xmas 2011

Be VERY careful about saying you have an approved alarm fitted to reduce your premiums. If you make a claim & the insurers can prove that you had NOT switched your alarm on, you WON’T be covered for the loss. I was advised about this by the insurer when I last renewed my policy.0

Just an aside to your interesting query...
The same thing happened to me last time my home insurance was due for renewal. Of course my exisiting insurer increased the premium (why wouldn't they when so few customers bother to change insurer but just keep on renewing year after year?).
Anyway, like you I found a cheaper quote via a broker.
But then, I went back to my original insurer (why wouldn't I?) who - low and behold - reduced their quote over the phone so it was cheaper still.
Hassle = zero. Paperwork = zero. Satisfaction = unquantifiable.
Going back to the query. Its your responsibility to disclose all material facts so safest plan I'd go back to your original insurer and explain the situation and ask them to advise...0
