:j Anyone know of an internet site I can go to to get an estimate of the value of my house for insurance purposes. An estate agents estimate includes the land but in the event of an insurance claim The land would still be mine so it would not form part of the claim and I assume therefore should not be included in the buildings value for the insurance quote.

Check http://abi.bcis.co.uk/ for details of calculating the rebuild cost of your property.

Just saved myself £200 on my home insurance renewal at Tesco. I don't usually check how much my renewal is with them because they were my employers and I assumed I was getting a good deal. Now I don't work for them I thought I would shop around and just for comparison to go to the other companies with I did a quote on Tesco.com. They have a 50% off offer at the moment so I phoned them. The first person wan't very helpful till I asked her to cancel the auto renewal. She put me through to someone who gave me the price off the website for my renewal... Result
  • this is prob a daft question that has been answered before somewhere but i can't find it!

Hi, I don't post often but thought you might like to know I just saved lots of money by swapping my house/contents insurance.

Got the HSBC insurance when we got our mortgage and it's due for renewal 3rd Nov so spent some time looking at Martins guides and went through a few comparing sites.
Anyway, I went with The AA in the end which I would never have considered before (cos the AA is rubbish and leaves you sat on the hardshoulder in the rain at 5am by yourself for 3 hours EVEN IF YOU CRY ON THE PHONE ah-hem). So my insurance has gone from £454ish to £188ish and then they phoned me to confirm some details and it's been reduced again slightly.

Think about how much you have in your home....I know we don't have £50000 worth of stuff in the house (being skint newly-weds in a pretty scruffy old house), including all fixtures and fittings and everything, so I reduced our contents value.

Really read everything and think..do you have bikes worth £1000 in your garage? Also make sure you record all your locks and stuff on the quotes as it reduces them. Look at me the expert when I spent a couple of hours trawling sites! D x

    Hi

I followed Martins advice last time this offer was on and got a quote from Tesco's even though my renewal was some time away. I then used this quote to negotiate a vastly reduced premium from my current supplier ( The Prudential) I was astounded that they reduced the premium from £424 to £185 :T

I used Nationwide Via Quidco. £135.00/year wich can be paid monthly without any interest. And quidco validated £70.00 which might get paid this month. So in effect I only paid £65.00 for a 4 bedroom building and content insurance. No accidental damage.

Hi, this is my first post on the message board, and I really hope that someone out there can help me.
I've looked everywhere, but I can't find any answers.

I'm about to move into my first property in London, renting with 2 friends.
However, having just spoken to Tesco to find out about contents insurance with their 50% off deal, they said they wouldn't cover me because there was more than one unrelated person living in the property.
I tried ringing BIBA - but its an 0901 number and costs a fortune even if you don't get through to someone.

Does anyone know who will provide contents insurance for a residence with 3 separate, unrelated tenants?
And it is my primary residence, so I can't come under my parents insurance or get student insurance as far as I can work out.

Thank you, from a very confused person!

When i renewed our insurance-I didnt really understand if i needed accidental damage on buildings (as i already have accidental damage on contents)-so i asked the insurer.

Their reply (which they had to go off the line to check for) was "its for diy accidents".

Well as OH never does diy-and is not likely to put his foot through the ceiling,i thought i didnt need it.

Until-a faulty stove-top coffee pot blew a gasket, covering every wall and ceiling in reach with coffee stains (you wouldny believe how far it could go)-this is where i discovered we werent covered for the damage to the walls.
