I've just been hit by a renewal quote up 37% from last years premium (£135.45 to £186.90 - and that including no claims bonus). Running the same quote on the Internet I'm getting it for £126. I phoned direct line for an explanation, they could not give me any apart from not being eligible for the discounts on the web. I have declined renewal of my existing policy & have purchased the web offer. It is still the cheapest offer out there. Can anyone advise if this is an excessive price increase that the FSA should be made aware off?
My DL renewal quote went up massively this year too - and no free travel insurance. I checked through moneysupermarket.com and got a policy just as good for almost half price and can still pay monthly but for lower interest (Esure). I have car and life insurance with DL but I'm shopping around to replace those now too.0 -
Got my renewal through from DL. £565 in total. Decided to use the tips in Martin's article and managed to get separate buildings and contents insurance from the Pru and Esure respectively. Total cost £320, minus £160 Quidco (already tracked) which works out at £160 - saving over £400.
Incidentally, getting a quote from DL on the web came out at £320 too, so I could have saved £245 in any event from the same insurer just by going online. Crazy.0 -

Tesco ONLINE QUOTE £108
I phoned up and she said this was a discounted offer 35% and did not include my one claim in ten years.
Though there did not seem to be any objection to me taking the online deal.0 -
How bizzare is this. Last month I got a renewal notice from Barclays informing me my Home & Contents insurance for the next 12 months would be £195. So I got on to one of the broker sites and guess which one came out cheaper? You got it, Barclays at £165 for the identical policy I had, plus I would get £50 cash back if I did it online. Needless to say I snapped their hand off, and paid there and then. A couple of weeks later I had a letter from Barlclays saying how sorry they were I hadn't decided to renew my insurance with them! Then a further 2 weeks down the line I received a cheque for £50!!
Talk about the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing. Both these policies, benefits, whats covered etc. were identical.0 -
Just a heads up for Council tenants.
The council operate a scheme for their tenants which 'apparently' works out cheaper than going direct, so double check first.
I only found this out today."I did then, what I knew then. And when I knew better, I did better"0 -
Hi,
Forgive me if it hasn't been asked but...
Does anyone know the rights of Students with regards to Home Contents Insurance?
Most of the search engines give me a quote at a reasonable price but when I phone to confirm details, the price is changed after being asked further questions.
Any ideas to go for cheap Student/Home Contents insurance?

2 options as i see it:
1. get covered under your parents house insurance cover. I know LV offer this.
2. Buy your own insurance. Try Endsleigh insurance - they had great deals but that was years ago for me.
i suppose 3rd option - do you really need it? I got it my 1st year but nevr bothered with it - risk i took. But i had few expensive items then.0 -
Hi - does anyone know any websites where I can compare prices for insurance for Grade II listed buildings? The one I own is in great condition but there is an in built assumption in every web site I have seen that there are falling down which is why they wont touch them
Thanks a million0 -
Before anyone buys home insurance on price alone, be very wary as based on my experience its not always worth it. Two years ago I changed my home insurance on my Spanish property from a local company to Intasure who are part of the Norwich Union group underwritten by Towergate in the UK. Last Xmas a severe storm caused roof damage and subsequent rain damage and I was led a dance by all three companies who refused to pay up for a variety of different reasons. The cop outs they applied included undisclosed caveats such of the wind speed not being high enough, the damage was accidental and not an act of god and general vague prevarication over honoring my claim. One other aspect thats not obvious is that the excess amount is applied to every section in the schedule/policy ramping up a modest €150 amount to a possible €1200 for a claim. After 4 months and having my claim rejected by NU, I passed all my documentation to the financial ombudsman who after a further 4 months found in my favour and Towergate coughed up the money. The lesson to learn here is that the only way insurance companies can offer low cost premiums, is by having no intention to pay up at the first instance of a legitimate claim. Indeed they will try and wear you down until a lot of people will give up, but don't lose heart, just stick to your guns as I did and you may get a pleasant surprise. My advice is to keep all paperwork (theres and yours), if possible record any telephone conversations, pursue it until they refuse to pay, and when they use non disclosed caveats, send all the documents to the financial ombudsman to complain. Typical get outs are not enough rain, not enough wind, it was an accident and not act of god, bumped up excess's but if its not in your schedule/policy you stand a very good chance of getting the claim settled in your favour.0
