But what do you spend your money on?
A lot of the time it is not what one earns but how they budget it.

Exactly - some people are better with money than others. It's not rocket science.

OK, no need for the aggressive reply. I thought it was obvious from the tone of my post that it was lighthearted.

i wasnt being aggressive & apologise if you was offended, maybe you got too much red eye

On one of the money saving shows recently on the TV, a pensioner lived with her OH, went on hol 5 times a year, her pension was no more than the next, it wasthe way she saved on her food shop by making her own/growing her own, making home made gifts, recycling, buying her coat in the summer and her summer clothes in winter that type of thing, googling for best bargainsl always using coupons and free cycle all that so that the money she did have got spent where she wanted it to on hols:D

  • Thank you everyone.

The thing is, the people that I know don't seem to be the type at all that would save money/compromise on anything. I think that's why I'm quite baffled.

so if its lighthearted then why don't you lightheartedly ask your friends yourself where they get their money from?

you seem to know enough about their business even down to what what clothes they buy that I would assume you could just ask them

they might be able to give you tips on budgeting
Its not that we have more patience as we grow older, its just that we're too tired to care about all the pointless drama ;)
  • Why are some of you trying to see the worst in my post and making out that I had some nasty hidden agenda behind asking? I asked a question, in a lighthearted way, and have had snipey replies from ZARA and cbrown.

You have no idea what goes on behaind closed doors.

All you are doing is comparing them by your own money habits.

You have just made me think, I know a person that has 'designer clothes' gets them from charity shops and proudly tells if asked how much it cost and whre she got it from and it is always beautiful and she looks just perfect, sure they are last seasons (sometimes TKMAK has the latest up to date things at the fraction of cost) but wherever they came from she enjoys them, they cost less than would be expected and from that saving she can spend more on something else or save towards a hol etc, every penny counts:D

I think people are trying to point out that all the scenarios are not covered just by looking at what they have, more of how did they manage to get it on x amount of money needs to be explored

  • A lot of the time it's about how you budget and where you shop. My eldest has a friend whose mother and I have become sort-of-friends as we have 3 children all of similar ages. To the outside world we have a comparable lifestyle, but I know for a fact she spends at least double per month than I do.

Designer labels - are they all this seasons? The difference in price is unreal sometimes. Also is the whole outfit designer? When my ex and I were together I occasionally wore designer tops, but although that made the whole outfit look expensive the jeans and shoes were high street. For children second hand designer clothes are quite cheap. I don't do my shopping in Waitrose and always use my supermarket. I also get it delivered as then I buy less rubbish while I'm wandering around. I don't walk instead of taking the car, but I don't use my car wastefully either.

Meal planning is where I make the biggest savings. I've seen her spending £150-£200 a week on shopping and they still have to pop out at some point to buy odds and ends to make a meal out of what they've bought come Friday.

Holidays - I couldn't believe some of ex's friends who'd go to the travel agent and pay the first price suggested for trips to America. Especially for the likes of Disney. Whereas I'd research and book flights and hotels seperately, buy park tickets locally and work out the best car hire and insurances etc.
