A lot of companies offer share-incentive plans, whereby you put aside x amount of your salary per month for 3 or 5 years and at the end get to buy shares at a discounted rate as at the start and sell at the current price. When the economy was strong, you could be getting a 5-10k payout each year from this. It's still a good non-risk scheme, but the returns are much lower (if any!). This can help fund these large purchases & luxury holidays.0

My husband earns over 50k a year and I dont work. We dont drink, smoke, I do like to shop, I like my son to have named clothes, his tops anyway. I think it just depends on what you spend your money on. We dont spend a lot socially. We do spend what we can on the kids though. We don't have weekends away or many holidays. We like the kids to get good birthday and christmas presents, nice clothing. We take them ice skating, swimming, cinema, odd day out. The people you talk about might make cut backs in other places. :-)0

I think any family with 2 children and an income of £50K should be able to have a nicely fitted out house and be able to dress well, unless a disproportionate amount of their income is going on debts (including those that overstretch themselves with their mortgage).
I wear a lot of White Stuff, Fat Face etc. but it is almost all bought in sales, mainly because I never like buying anything at full price. When my now teenage boys were younger they almost always wore Gap or Next, again very rarely bought at full price. I will quite happily tell somebody how cheap I got something for if they compliment me on it.0 -
Just do yourself. You can also enjoy your happy life with your account. Having unlimited money does not mean that you are happy.0

Both I and OH are retired (not yet aged 60) and have what (I guess) a lot of people would consider a very good lifestyle (I like it too.
)
Foreign holidays, no mortgage etc.
BUT - we worked for it.
When our contemporaries were driving round in BMWs, we didn't. We had smaller (less expensive) cars.
We didn't fly Business Class to the Far East and stay in 5* Spa hotels.
We did go to the Far East (and other places) but on more of a budget (although we didn't have to).
We were happy with that and often saw more of the country than those people holed up in a 5* All-Inclusive resort in the middle of nowhere.
I worked hard at finding bargain holidays.
We saved hard, not hard enough to make it a chore but enough to make sure we could enjoy our retirement.
Whilst other people were shopping at M&S, I was (happily) cooking big batches of chilli and bolognaise sauce.
Whilst other people were buying ready meals, I was busy cooking them from scratch.
I still work hard at saving money, even though we aren't in debt.
If I see mince reduced at our local Tesco, I buy it.
In fact, if I see 500gm packs of mince, I buy lots and split it into 340 gm packs (12 oz) which is enough for 2 of us.
That way from 6 x 500gm packs I get 9 meals for 2 people instead of 6.
I bought 6 x 500gm packs of mince for £6.60 (instead of £13.20). That's 9 x 3/4lb which works out at less than 40p per person.
I buy reduced veg and make my own soup for lunches.
I buy most things on BOGOF, anything that keeps, and put it in my garage (I can it my corner shop).
I buy a lot of clothes from charity shops, that way you can get one-offs.
Most people say I always look good.
I don't have to work so hard at saving money but I feel I can then justify buying say, a pair of UGG boots.
I don't even need to justify that - I just like to.
I guess I was born thrifty with a spendthift underside - IYSWIM. :rotfl:
It works for me.
OP
as per your post, £50K is a reasonable income.
Maybe your friends are doing something you're not, money-saving wise.
Or maybe they are up to their ears in debt.
Or maybe they have won the lottery and haven't 'fessed up.
Whichever way, be happy with your lifestyle - or change it.0 -
Overall, it doesn't bother me that others with less income seem to have a more luxurious life except for when it comes to holidays. I am itching to get away, discover new places and experience this with my family and I do get frustrated when once again, we can't do it this year. Windy cold days such as today has a way of accentuating the feelingSo instead I plan my itinary for 2020!!!
You could be dead by then. Or worse. You never think it will happen you you, but trust me, 2012 has taught me that it can and will.
Why would you overpay on a mortgage when it is preventing you from fufilling ambitions of travelling and seeing the world?
Stop overpaying on the second mortgage for 12 months (it won't kill you!) and do something extraordinary."One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -
very true mrcow. It upsets me to see my parents with more money than they can spend but no health to do the travelling they would love. In fact they now advise me to spend a little more, save a little less, and invest in memories. Never thought I'd see the day...Debt free 4th April 2007.
New house. Bigger mortgage. MFWB after I have my buffer cash in place.0
