  • I just wondered if anybody had any ideas what they would do with leftover Pate? - you know you buy it in for visitors and only a small amount gets eaten.

What about using it as a stir through paste for a pasta dish? Chuck in tomatoes, peppers/mushrooms/corn etc and it's a meaty veg pasta delight!

Or use as a base for a stuffing for romano peppers - mix with a few spices, some cooked rice and teeny diced onion/tomato, stuff and roast.
  • I might be sick if I have to eat any more stir fry veg. I bought a huge bag and have eaten it every day for 3 days but I've really had enough now.

If you're stuck with still more of this leftover, why not freeze it and put it towards a veg stock? Or chop it up and put the appropriate bits into a spag bol or other pasta dish?

    Yes!
Just about to do some cooking for my sister (brand new mum), who is falling behind on stuff. So I'll sneak it into her spaghetti bolognese.
    Thanks :D

  • Yesterday.....Saved home grown leeks, they were going mouldy in the garage (got buried over Xmas), all peeled and about a quarter made into soup, rest in fridge. Made carrot cake with the last of the Xmas carrots. Used the last of the peppers and mushrooms in a chilli for lunch today, one portion left for freezing. Have put all the veg ends and peelings in bags in freezer for stock making when i have enough. But had to bin 250ml UHT milk I had been saving to make yogurt, smelt foul about 25p and have some very wet l/o salad in the fridge that is nearly all water now so another 10p :(
  • Dissapointingly i have had my first throw outs this week,

2 apples out of a bag of 8 when i went to eat them at work were rotten on the inside, they looked fine on the outside when i out them in my bag :(. The most annoying thing was they wernt even whoopsied, they were fresh this week from the supermarket! yet the whoopsied stuff is still going strong.....grrr

  • Tonight I found a tub of coleslaw that had been pushed to the back of the fridge sometime after Boxing Day... only a tiny bit left in it though = 10p.

Today at lunch I used up some leftover potatoes from last night's dinner, and with dinner tonight we had some baked beans that were in the fridge from a couple of days ago. I'm getting a little better at this ;)

Just been having a quick read through the last few posts of this thread, very interesting and some good tips and help re using leftovers.
I am quite good as using stuff up but over xmas have a few things left, I have pancetta and mushrooms which i will use to make a sort of carbonara pasta dish tonight.
I seem to have TWO celery left so will make some soup today.

This week I have used 3 very ripe pears and made a crumble, other half said I dont think I have had warm pears before its delicious(lol he wont be getting it again unless I have any leftover pears again)
Made spicy parsnip soup from the two bags I had left from xmas.
Made leek and potato soup from some leeks I had.

I dont tend to buy loads of stuff that gets thrown away, but will join this challenge anyway as I may be able to come up with suggestions.
  • I also have to report my first chuckout of the year - 1/2 a litre of milk that unexpectedly went off since last night :(

I'm going to count it at 50p, and seriously going to think about using UHT from now on - we had a carton open before we went to relatives for Christmas, and when we got back it was still perfectly drinkable.
  • Sorted out one of the kitchen cupboards yesterday -partly to do a stock take before shopping and was not impressed when I found a Mr M's Huge Naan bread tucked up and way too high for me to see normally - Anyway although the date on it was June 2011,normally I would have used it but I couldn't tell what was mould and what was the spicy bits on it :o so had to get rid unfortuntaley - couldn't throw it to the birds either as it was so solid it would have knocked them out!
No idea of how much it was - got it on offer and checked via net and found that around that time they were offer at 50p - so will declare that.

The duck liver pate I made lasted longer than I thought and was delish but after a week threw away about a tablespoon - so 10p there I guess.

Was given another left over duck at begining of week froma arelative - she said they had it day before but would not eat it after as you are not supposed to re-heat it(well I did with the one I bought) so I gladly took it and have been eating cold duck sarnies all week but there is still some meat left on the legs and I was now after day 5 going to give it to my dog but he is not very well so it looks like it too will have to be binned ( shame) but no waste in monetry value to me as it was a left over gift!

Apart from that am slowly going through all leftovers and trying to be clever and inventive to make sure I use food up.

    Keep it up everyone! :T
