Useless/unwanted gifts?

  • In fairness this one should've been good but ended up accidentally useless - I got a lovely pair of thick, fleecy gloves this year, great I thought. Until I removed the tag to try the 2nd glove on and noticed that I had two right-handed gloves and no left hand glove! I'd feel absolutely terrible mentioning that to the giver; they're really nice gloves and clearly it's just a manufacturing error (they were attached together with the tag and you'd assume that you got one for each hand!) so I guess I'll just quietly bury them. Good for a laugh at least, if disappointing as well.

Useless gifts... hmmmm :D I've had loads over the years! A filofax at 8 years old, a briefcase at 10, a box of cup a soup, a pillow, wine when I didn't drink, passport holder & luggage tags when I never go away and don't own a passport, a bingo game when i've never played bingo in my life:D

Well I kind of assume they should be designed to be comfy on a person who is the size on the label. Do you really think a pair of size 8 pjs will be skintight on a size 8 person therefore they should buy a size 14?

I thought so too. I buy them in the size I wear in clothing and they're always roomy and comfy. If I bought them 2 sizes bigger than I wear they'd look 2 sizes too big. I've been given PJs that are bigger than my size and the bottoms fall down, the top is too baggy etc.
But I suppose a lot of it would depend on shape. My top is smaller than my bottom so pyjama tops in the right size fit well, but if I had large boobs for example I wouldn't want to be squeezing them in to a pyjama top designed for a typical size 10 person.

Who buys JimJams in their normal size..most people go for 2 or 3 sizes bigger they are meant to be comfy

Cos theyd fall down?! Its not like pjs are fitted to be skin tight :rotfl: I could probably fit both my legs in a pair 3 sizes too big for me!

The worst thing to receive in my opinion is perfume that is not to your taste at all, purely because you know the person will have spent a good amount of money on it, and if you don't like the smell you really can't wear it.

Probably why I very rarely buy perfume for someone unless I know it's one they wear or have told me they like.

I agree. My friend once bought me a perfume that I can only describe as smelling as grass to me. It was so gross I had to bin it.
  • haha my MIL got me lovely jimjams, all cotton, just right for my skin in a 14/16
    shame I'm about an8/10 - 12!
If I smile and ask nicely I'm hoping that I may be able to change them.
Shame really cos thy are really nice too.
    xx
  • Well I am sitting here with an Ellen MacArthur autobiography ("because you like reading"), a pink lacy tissue box cover, a bottle of Lidl bucks fizz (I'm teetotal and even if I wasn't this looks really grim) and a box of really cheap seashell chocolates, not even the cheap Guylain ones.

Luckily my DH made up for it with a decent present for once - for my 40th this year he bought me a voucher for bikini line laser hair removal. It was a looong time before he had the opportunity to see my bikini line again I can tell you.

In a way I think it isn't so offensive if you are slim and someone buys you clothing a couple of sizes too big, but if you are say size 18 and someone buys you size 22 they are basically saying they think you're really fat and must be a really big size.

yes, thats exactly how I took it too. She was always making digs about my weight but she used to be a size 24 and had slimmed to a 10 - you'd think someone who had been that big would know how it feels to have people be nasty about your size.

My partially sighted Nan asked if we thought a secondhand popup book she'd dug up from somewhere would be ok for a family toddler... on closer inspection, it was a sex book!
Lol that reminds me of when I was 10 and my Nan gave me a book called My Uncle Oswald, assuming it would be suitable because it was written by popular children's author Roald Dahl. She didn't realise he also wrote adult books and the plot is: "Oswald discovers the world's most powerful aphrodisiac and with the aid of a female accomplice they place the aphrodisiac inside chocolate truffles made by Prestat of London. By this means, the accomplice seduces the world's most famous men, with the intent of selling their semen to women wishing to be impregnated by them. (The semen is collected via condoms.)"

I'd read most of it before mum realised and confiscated it!

My MIL gave me an ashtray for Christmas. I've never smoked, although her son, my husband did at the time, but she never gave him an ashtray!

Also, for a wedding present, we got a gift from my in-laws neighbour. It was good of him to think of us. Do you remember those plaster of paris moulds you used to get - usually for kids to make. We got a completed one of them. It was a woodpecker, very badly painted! Looked like something a 3yo had done. :o Also from one of his relatives, we got a wall clock. It was in a frame and the backround was black felt and there was a gaudy butterfly on one of the hands. I can't even find a picture of a similar one online. I'd love to post a picture. I should've kept it - it might be worth something. :rotfl:
