My mum's friend got a venetian blind this christmas, she wanted a hat.The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.Bertrand Russell0

my MIL bought me a size 14 set of PJs last year... I'm a size 6:rotfl:marywooyeah wrote: »My ex's mum bought me a size 22 nightie, I was around an 18 at the time and hover between 14 and 16 now and although she said it was because "nighties are supposed to be baggy" I couldn't help but think she'd done it as a fat dig.
My husband gave me a set of weightwatchers scales for christmas a few years ago and couldn't understand why I took offence....so I unwrapped them and made him get on them in front of his family! needless to say he soon saw why he'd embarrassed me with his gift.
Sounds like your MIL's like you as much as mine does me. In the days when we exchanged gifts (thankfully long over, as is any form of communication) she surpassed herself with the following:
Size 20-22 Camisole Top and Knickers - I was a size 10 at the time, her response was that "it was obvious that my weight would rocket at some point" and they would fit soon enough. I've never been bigger than a 14.
A pressed glass jar with chocolates inside - the best before date was 3 years earlier.
A pair of damart slipper/boot things in size 8 - I'm a 5.
A kitchen clock in the shape of a frying pan.
A calendar dishtowel from the year before
A pair of child's legwarmers and matching tights????
and the cream of them all - 100 cigarettes. I have never smoked in my life -I immediately handed them back - she seemed quite happy, possibly as she puffed like a chimney most of the time. That was obviously her plan.
I took comfort from the fact that her other daughter in law suffered in similar ways - I can still remember watching her opening up her gift one year - a babydoll nightdress and thong which was a size 8. My SIL is a shapely size 16 most of the time but at that particular time was about 8 months pregnant and about 4 stone heavier than usual. MIL's response to her bursting into tears was to say "it was an incentive for her to get rid of some of that fat as it couldn't possibly all be baby".0 -

My maternal granny used to re-gift items as presents. If you were lucky it was just crap but unused. If you were very unlucky it was crap and used. Of the 5 female cousins, i seemed to be "the favoured one" and ususually got a piece of toot but new. Plastic bead necklaces from crackers, that sort of thing. My sister once got a small plastic hairbrush, complete with someones hairs in it. Other highlights received by one of other of the cousins, a pair of obviously not new granny pants, a hand mirror with no glass in it, a partial set of frilly hankies with someone elses initials on, and a small china statue of a cat with one leg broken off.
Now, i acknowlegde that its the thought that should count, but really, even if she WAS broke, which she wasnt, we wouldnt have minded getting nothing, and what kind of thoughts does a used plastic hairbrush give?Married 13/03/10 #1 DD born 13/01/12!!

Well I kind of assume they should be designed to be comfy on a person who is the size on the label. Do you really think a pair of size 8 pjs will be skintight on a size 8 person therefore they should buy a size 14?
In a way I think it isn't so offensive if you are slim and someone buys you clothing a couple of sizes too big, but if you are say size 18 and someone buys you size 22 they are basically saying they think you're really fat and must be a really big size.0 -
Well my own offerings seem rather pathetic now having read this thread
A few years ago a friend got me a rather "fetching" bulldog which had a clip in for a photo- when I am a big big cat person.
My Dad bought me at the age of 13 two huge wheely suitcases- had no money for holidays or use for them really- though in later years they did come in handy.
That, and people often buy me Lavendar, I ruddy hate the smell of it, 'tis vile, and I have pretty much told everyone I hate it but it still appears under the tree0 -
I receive on the whole very nice presents except from the partner of my OH's Dad.
The past 2 years I was given the same jewellery box, first time I was pleased as needed a new one but then had the exact same one from Argos again last year, it has never been taken out the box and is still in the cupboard.
This year I was given a bag and it's horrid. I love bags and have expensive ones like Louis Vuitton and Mulberry down to Kipling and Radley which I use for work and also ones from New Look etc. I know it's the thought that counts but this is truly not my style and it looks cheap with scratchy shiny material with a plastic pretend crystal hanging from it.
Even my father in law said what I was having was carp so gave my OH a card with £30 in to give to me to make up for it as he said I always put thought into what we get them both.0 -
I have another mother in law faux pas...or maybe it was intentional.
She bought me full brief knickers in (I think) a size 18-20, I was a size 1o/12 at the time and wore knickers a lot smaller than full brief ones!
They didn't go to waste though, I gave them to a friend who had just had twins by a C section and they were wonderful to go over her tummy and scar in the first few days/weeks after the op.
Yesterday she bought me another set of knickers....again the completely wrong type and wrong size. I've given them to my pregnant sister in law for after she has delivered! We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0
