Useless/unwanted gifts?

MIL usually puts together a stocking of 'bits' for the 2 kids (age 19 and 14), this year DS (19) had toenail clippers which caused much amusement. In his stocking she put a small bottle of Jaques cider, DD (the 14 year old) eagerly opened her stocking to find similar gifts but rather than the cider she had a bottle of water. Her face was priceless!! We have always allowed her the odd drink here and there and MIL knows this, she also knows DD likes a bucks fizz at Christmas so she was gutted with a bottle of water. She moaned at MIL later in the day but the look on her face had us in fits.0

Also, my Aunt is quite a finicky woman who's impossible to buy for so this year Mum bought her some varieties of tea from Ringtons. Knowing how Aunt can never resist squeezing presents Mum decided to pop the tea into a few porridge oats boxes so if she started to poke and prod she wouldn't pop the bags.
It was somewhere around the 28th when Aunt called and thanked Mum for the Porridge, she said she didn't usually eat breakfast but she'd try it.... Not sure who was the dafter, Mum or Aunt but it's obvious they are related.0 -

Having a laugh at other peoples rubbish gifts. I have a relative who habitually buys or regifts rubbish gifts. She buys in the sales . Nothing wrong with that I do it myself. But it seems price is more important than the actual item bought. Too many rubbish ones to mention . Remember one year I got a stainless steel tea pot. One of the cheap ones you would get in a cafe. I don't drink tea. Had various knickers bought always in wrong size.
Girls would get clothes never the right size. Short jammies at Xmas 3 sizes too big. Same swimming costume 2 years running cos shop she worked in went bankrupt and she bought excess stock.
ceramic speed gun ornament Police man holding speed gun !!!
This year I got a cork screw . Man in tiger skin loin cloth with screw part between his legs & Olive oil pourer !! Daughter got vests age 11 she is 9 and a colouring book for a 5 year old !! Dog keyring we are cat people. Drawing pencils used !!!
For some reason I found this completely hysterical and was sat here last night with tears pouring down my face making noises I did not know I was capable of making :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:0 -

I read the fake necklace thread last night (or rather skim read the first few pages) & saw someone saying something on the lines of if they didn't get what they wanted, their partner would be out the door.
Pretty disgusting is my view. So their relationship is based on the exchanging of gifts? Sad. Very sad.
I'd not kick up a stink. If i got something i didn't like, i'd just think oh i don't like that & that'd be it. I wouldn't be hiring any hitman!!0 -
I don't quite think it's meant that way, kicking up a stink because someone has bought something you don't like, I think it's more down to the lack of effort, and being thought of so little. I can only speak for myself and my female friends, but we seem to see gifts in a whole different way to our fellas.
I would be upset if husband bought me something last minute from the corner shop, or some tat that he had quite obviously but zero effort into, and I'll tell you why.
He does not lift a finger with regard to Christmas and Birthdays. I do all the shopping for both families, including his children. I put the tree up, decorate the house etc, I do this for the kids, I do all the cooking, cleaning, Christmas cards etc. I do not mind doing this at all. He does all the DIY, done our house up from top to bottom, including a new bathroom and kitchen so we have our balance.
However, the only thing he has to do is buy me a present. So after I go to all that effort for him and his family, I would be hurt and upset if I got something he put zero effort into.
For example: I would be upset if he went to Asda on Christmas eve and thoughtlessly bought a box of £30 chocolates just for the sake of buying something I would be upset.
However, this year I don't particularly like one of my presents, but I know in his head, a lot of thought/effort went into it. I really like my coffee and he went to a proper coffee selling shop and selected me a beautiful cafetiere and some grains. I don't particularly care for the item, but such effort went into thinking about how much I like something it meant a lot.
I have a lot of emotion and I was really touched by this. I think that is generally the point the pearl necklace receiver was making. If it is the thought that counts, then she is right to be upset that such little thought went into her gift.I'm never offended by debate & opinions. As a wise man called Voltaire once said, "I disagree with what you say, but will defend until death your right to say it."
Mortgage is my only debt - Original mortgage - January 2008 = £88,400, March 2014 = £47,000 Chipping away slowly! Now saving to move.0 -

Me too! I've been Skeggy and Blackpool this year and I have never seen an ornament like this! I would buy one now just for comedy value!I'm never offended by debate & opinions. As a wise man called Voltaire once said, "I disagree with what you say, but will defend until death your right to say it."

My BIL is absolutely useless at buying presents, we've even resorted to Secret Santa on my DH's side of the family so that only one person has to suffer BIL's 'gifts' and we had hoped that he'd put a little more thought into it (rather than the chilli grinder I got one year that didn't even work and the Power Rangers DVD that DH received!). Sadly DH was the recipient this year and was given this. Words fail me! It'll just look lovely on the bookcase with our pretty wallpaper behind and a vase of flowers next to it!
You'd have thought that when the big 'Rocky' print that OH recieved for his birthday never got displayed he'd have realised that we're not massive fans of his decorating style... but it hasn't sunk in! I wonder if my dismayed look and comment that, 'You really don't want me to have a nice house do you?!' has hit the mark this year!Doubt it....
I agree with you and think this is odd and tbh scary... but know full well if my dad or brother were presented with this they would be over the moon.... strange tastes. Thanks to everyone who posts competitions0 -
My hubby's grandma is always the one who buys presents off of the pound shop on Leeds Market (twin packs of old spice, american tan tights, facial wipes) but the best was my SIL got a lovely wrapped Chat magazine with the crosswords completed!!0

my mil and fil always drop prestents off at the begining of december and every year there isnt one for me (4 years of no gifts), but i get told we will post it not to worry, and they never do, which is fine if they dont want to but me anything.
This year we were invited to their house for christmas day, so no forgetting gifts this year, their other dil opens her gift bag ohhhh £100 gift card i open mine (thinking we must have the same thing, this is more then making up for the missed years) but no i got a stainless steal nail file, with white powder on, am guessing it had been used.
Also i have never had so much as a birthday card of them in the last 5 years lol i think they dont like me.0
