£40 a person a week on food is quite high. There are 21 meals in a week and that's almost £2 per meal. I would be aiming at £20 a week for a single adults adding £15 a week for older children and another adult and add £10 a week for younger children. Batch cooking will bring the price per meal down so it's cheaper to feed more than one person.

Why whats wrong with value food?

I manage on £15 a week for me and 2 children
  • nothing - just dont think it healthly i guess its personal choice think the guide is £35 pppw how do you manage on 15
  • Vicky pop over to the Old Style board & try the Grocery Challenge.

A great supportive bunch with loads of tips .... and some fantastic recipes.

There are families of 4 who manage well on £220/month incl nappies etc (you're spending around £320 in a 4 week one) and couples who manage on £100 (I'm still learning so am well above this atm - although it is coming down with the help and support I'm getting from the challenge).

You're also spending a lot on haircuts ... nearly £450/year - even between 2 of you, that's a fair bit. Try looking into discount / student nights, leaving an extra week between cuts, low maintenance style etc. I've had mine cut twice this year and coloured once = £62 total spend over the year.

  • There are some things that we get that my kids will only have the value brands of - digestive biscuits. And they prefer Ald! chocolate at 30p per 100g.
I'm working on getting our budget to £50pw for 4 of us, including nappies, smellies etc. It can be done. You might be surprised that some value stuff is ok (but I don't ever buy value meat).

By not buying anything that has a brand name attached to it. Buy fresh vegetables and meat and cook everything from scratch. It doesn't take long. There isn't much that you really need to buy that is branded.
