Hey all, I posted on here before, and I've started adding photos of my (gradually) developing HUGE cross stitch of the Great Wall of China, to my blog, here: http://www.50ayear.com/the-hobbies/

It's coming on (about a month in now) and I'm loving it!

That looks amazing! Good luck with that :T:T:T What is the actual stitch size?

    Now.... little dilema......

Should I stitch the smoke from the planes in neat red, blue, white or in verigated thread??

I just think verigated will give a better more natural effect but am worried it won't be quite as bright.
It's only 14ct aida as anyone stitched 3 threads a stitch on this? debating 2verigated/ 1 normal to try and get the colour to be a bit more striking?

was going to get the threads from here - 2 for £1.80. I have the blue already. was thinking 4020 (or 4015) for the 'white'. (was thinking 4010 but just googled and thats more lavender apparently). and 4130? for Red.

    Views please. ta.

I think you will be fine if you want to do three strands, hadn't thought about variegated threads, but am looking at my stash in front of me: 4010 IS very lavenderish, 4020 is very green and 4130 is practically brown when you have it in front of you.

If I were choosing, it would be:

    Red - 4200
    Blue - 4230
White - Very difficult tbh, I would probably go with the grey one you mentioned; Stormy sky 4015

Aw thanks everyone! The kit is Chinese (I do not understand the instructions, but it's fairly standard) - I went to China a couple of years ago and they had whole shops dedicated to cross stitch! They do massive kits for pretty reasonable prices (this one was about £25, I kid you not!).

I actually ordered this one through a Chinese website, but it never came, then a couple of months ago I found it again on Amazon with an English seller, and I just couldn't resist.

*Note to self* NEVER visit China........

gildius - wow - this is going to be stunning. Good luck.

Help ladies (gildius you may be able to help me with this one). Sleeping Beauty is a chinese kit - most things are self explanatory but was wondering what 'side cancels' are??? Had thought possibly half stitches but I don't think that is right. The only other thing it could be is backstitch - and the only thing that is backstitched is her eyelid :j

DH has just photcopied the charts for me - aw bless him. Think he must be after some peace and quiet once I get started.

Chicky I agree with Louise that 4130 isn't suitable and that 4200 is the best red but even so it is quite orangey and I would be tempted to do what you suggested and mix 2 strands of variegated with 1 strand of a "proper red".
I think 4015 will work well as it is a mix of pale greys and white so quite close to the "white" smoke.
I think your design looks stunning and will be great when stitched.

I'm getting on with Hard Frost - over half done now. I'll post an update later.

However, having bought the Escher HAED I'm already planning it out :). I've looked at the pre-marked Magic Guide aida and it's only £1 or so more expensive than plain fabric and would save so much time. But it only seems to come in 14 or 18 count. The magic guide evenweave goes up to 25 count but I don't fancy stitching over one thread of 25 count and the guidelines are set to stitch over 2 threads, so the squares wouldn't match the pattern anyway.

So - does anyone know if magic guide aida is available in 20 count (the smallest I'd fancy stitching over one thread)?

If not, those of you who've done HAEDs before - are they OK on 18 count? Is that small enough to show the detail?

And also - the pattern refers to Krenik blending filament. Do you stitch that on its own or in combination with a strand of ordinary thread?

    Thank you in advance :A

    Evening to all

I finally have a place at a craft fair to sell my keyrings/coasters and have downloaded some lovely free charts from Debbie Cripps website. Does any one know of the best place for small pieces of different colour aida (samples I suppose) or other free small charts. I have found some in my mags but never seem to have the right threads!!!

Thank you both. Tis really hard to gage colours when you don't have them in front of you. I have a huge selection that I got in a bundle ages ago but typically nothing 'white smokey' or 'red smokey'.

ohhhh and typically I haven't labelled em up with code numbers either.

OHHHN just found more threads I hadn't wound onto bobbins. so I now have a verigated blue (possibly anchor 1212) and red (anchor 1203) so just a smokey one to find. the only one I have with grey tones goes from white to pitch black which is farr to dark.
loves how my "I've been censored" signature has been censored. LOL. Happy Christmas. :xmastree:

  • the full chart on 14ct would need to be around 60x38cm apparently.
However as long as I had the 38cm width it could be shorter as I'd only do one verse.

    .

Chicky - I can't find any sparkly aida though I was convinced I had some. I've got sparkly evenweave in 20 and 28 count and 28 and 32 count linen. I have got some damask aida which might be suitable - it's got a sheen rather than a sparkle (like damask tablecloths if you know what I mean) It was a Zweigart fabric but I don't think they make it any more. I've got 14 count in cream, white., mint green and oyster (a very pale pink). Let me know if you would like a piece - it's part of my decluttering plan :D
