I'll have to look out for that Fizzy Moon kit Flat_Eric, I don't get any of the mags anymoreCan anyone offer any advice on starting a design from a magazine? I have only stitched 'kits' before. OBviously I can buy the relevant fabrics and threads but I have no idea about what lengths to cut them too or how to make it more like a 'kit'.
Regards
Emma
I keep the threads I buy in these, keeps them tidy and no winding required! Also means I can keep smaller lengths as well.
When you buy a skein of thread you will see that one free end sticks out a little way. ( The other end is usually buried in the skein so if you have to hunt for it it's not the right one!) If you pull the free end the thread should come out smoothly, and not get caught up/tangled. I usually pull about 18inches or so, cut and then separate as required. If you cut it too long the thread may start to fray from being pulled through the fabric too many times.
I just cut threads as needed and put remenants back in the little bags, but if you want to pre cut all the threads you need you can buy punched cards to store them on like the ones you get in a kit.

I make my own thread sorters - an old cereal box or similar, and a hole punch - instant thread sorter!St. Francis said: “A man who uses his hands is a laborer. One who uses his hands and mind is a craftsman. He who uses his hands, and his mind, and his heart is an artist.”0

I use the floss bags that sk00bie1 mentioned about although these are the ones I buy. I also make my own thread cards. I find the bags very useful for storing tiny bits of leftover thread that you need occasionally just to do one or two odd stitches.
Unless I am using a piece of material that is way bigger than the design then I usually fold the material to find the centre point and start from there. I usually stitch round the edge of the material to stop it fraying (you could also do this if you had pinking shears) and I mark the chart off as I go to avoid mistakes. Then well its pretty much stitching as normal.0 -

So my project for today is going well. Not sure if I will get much more done tonight but should have it finished by tomorrow :T0 -
BEG, I must say Tulip Fields is really lovely. The windmill has to be my favourite part. You stitched that quite quickly really :j
So my kit arrived today and I must say I nearly passed out by the aida size. I wanted to put this on my wall and frame it but I don't know if it will fit in a frame let along fit on my bedroom wall!
Here is an image of the adia, that dot halfway up to the left is actually a penny I was using as reference :rotfl:
Don't know if i should attempt this or ask ali to produce a chart a tad bit smaller or even the words as backstitch instead of full stitches? This is the image I am stitching.
Anyone any opinions?0 -

Are you intending on stitching the background as well? If not why not do the wording in backstitch and do some sort of border around it. Not really sure what sort of border would be appropriate for the wording.
B_E_G - still loving the windmill and tulips. I think it will look stunning on a dark red wall.
I had a quick look on here at lunchtime and was going to comment on the attaching of beads and how to complete a design from a magazine but anyone has already commented and taken the words out of my mouth.Cross Stitch Cafe Member #59 :j

Yes the whole thing. The thing is I really like the blue (its my fave colour) and the pattern of the lights in the background. The finished design is 20" x 17.714" so in reality not that big, however could you frame that? And would it look right on a wall in a box room? Unless I hang it somewhere else in the house0 -
Pap The only thing I would suggest is maybe doing it in backstitch, white on a blue background? Otherwise I think it would have to be large so the writing shows up? I'm not sure about framing, to get the finished size maybe add 4in all round, but I think you'd have to hang it to see what it looked like!
Maria - thanks so much for the offer, you have a pm.
If anyone could help with me out with afor the Fizzy Moon kit I'd be most appreciative.
