I believe the EC are involved with how many VAT rates are allowable and that food has to be zero rated rather than exempt because 'exempt' is not allowed so they are not entirely blameless...

One I don't like is reduced VAT on domestic fuel - an anti-green measure if ever I saw one.
    I think....

Nope. This one is all British or at least mostly. I think the only bit from Brussels is that you can't use zero rating as a form of protectionism.

I seem to remember that prior to entry into the Common Market, there was no VAT but a purchase tax.

Ok, it's Christmas for me so here's question 2.

According to Bloomberg, how many 'bankers' lost their jobs worldwide in 2011?
    a. <100,000
    b. 100,000-200,000
    c. 200,000-300,000
    d. 300,000-400,000
    e. >400,000

Happy Christmas, especially to all unemployed bankers everywhere.

No idea. I would guess a bank employee.

Anyway, at the risk of sounding like a character from a bad 1980s cop movie, I ask the questions round here wise guy.

So it could include, cleaners, cooks, van drivers, maintenance workers, counter staff etc etc. If that is the case it has very little meaning.

Generally those jobs are contracted out so it's unlikely to include them.
