I'm up to £1000 saved but the weight loss is just awful. It's starting to make me question:

What is more important, savings or happiness?

I am miserable the size I am, it's stopping me going out, wearing the clothes I want, meeting new people. Yet I have enough money to invest in a personal trainer or something equally drastic like a boot camp. Obviously motivation is the major problem, but I need to kickstart it.

    What do you all think?
    6k in 2012: £4200.00/£6000.00
    6k in 2013: £8209.62/£6000.00
    7k in 2014: £5900/£7000
  • lack of motivation is a problem for me too. I belong to a gym/spa and mostly just use the pool and avoid the gym at the moment

Happiness is better than savings IMO (though haven't much experience of savings!)

I need motivation too. The difficulty is getting enough of a sense of urgency or whatever... even a sense that it's possible would be nice. :)

At the end of the day, though, there's no point us all being wealthy if we ain't around to enjoy it, so let's all at least do something to send our weights in the right direction! :)

Exactly Miggy. I need to stop consoling myself that it's OK I'm not losing weight because I'm doing well at work and saving loads of money.

Is there anybody on here who has had the experience of having no motivation whatsoever and then had some kind of change in their lives that has allowed them to embrace exercise? I am seriously considering a boot camp and replacing motivation with third party bullying!!

What use is a house and all the money for adventuring when I am only able to enjoy myself 50% because of self inhibition and have nobody to enjoy it with?

Yup finding out my husband has replaced me with a younger model sparked a nice initial weight loss for me. Then I realised actually, she may be younger but I'm better looking so I ended up putting most of it back on over Christmas.:rotfl:

I've now read some of the skinny b*tch books and that's sort of sparked me off on a mad 28 day detox. Let's see how long it lasts.

You are right though, the times in my life I've lost weight, I've just woken up with that 'right let's do it' head. You can have all the bullying in the world but you won't lose your weight or stick to the gym unless you yourself want to badly enough imho. I've forked out for a year's gym membership before and gone once.....when I'm happy I'm fatter :D

On a serious note, if you've no debt, then why the hell not invest in a personal trainer? I think the local council gyms have them and that's probably not quite as expensive. Would you consider an exercise class? Or what about taking up dance classes or karate? That way you'd be meeting like minded people, having some fun, getting out and about and NOT bullying yourself by proxy :)

  • trixie4 - I started running because my younger sister did. There's no way I was going to be beaten by her! I'm still running, she isn't!! Do you know anyone you can unleash your inner competitive demon at?

 Ulp! I'm sorry to hear about that, Shower-of-roses. But it's his loss. Good for you realising you're the better looking one. :) (Don't go hiding it under food, though :) ).

Personal Trainers - I can't afford one but I do know one quite well and I know he works all sorts of hours around what suits the people he trains, so no-one let the thought of your busy schedule out you off.

stroppy cow - nice reasoning! :D

As for me - eek - back up to the weight I was when I started this. :( As it's nearly Lent I think I will be giving up some sort of food or more likely sweets - as Mum is always loading me down with them it's a good excuse to refuse. Other than that I think my downfall is breads, cake and any other random carbohydrates.

Money-wise, I haven't saved much or spent much lately, but I'm still waiting for confirmation of the new bank account to come through which should mean another £100 to my total. :)

I agree with the motivation for weight loss is harder than the money side of things .. I've been dieting for a week but the weekend I've just gone mad.. massive meals out.. oh well, on the money front just got a cheque thru post for £31 which will go towards loan . Going to have a week with no booze and see if that helps with weight loss  going for a swim now last year I was going to the gym every day and actually lost weight and got pretty fit, but since November I've just sat around doing f all I'm fuming at myself for doing this to myself again

  • when I turned 50 I got motivated to do something and signed up to do the Sport Relief mile then followed that with the Race for Life and the Great North Run gradually building up the distance - raising money for other people through sponsorship was a good incentive for me. I've not done any running for a while now - can't seem to get the motivation again though!
The Sport Relief Mile was good fun - lots of people of all shapes and sizes and different levels of fitness - I think its coming up again soon. Is anyone else going to do it?
