Husband in hospital christmas day

Has anyone any good ideas for how to make my husband's Christmas day in hospital as cheerful as possible?
I will be taking him his dinner as best I can plus presents and christmas crackers. He has a heart condition but I imagine the rules can be bent for one day...he is currently mostly upset because he can't go for a smoke and is irritable. Of course he can go for a smoke but knows it will be seriously frowned on.
He doesn't drink and so ciggies and food are his pleasures.

Ok Im not going to sound like scrooge but the best present you can give each other is to support each other giving up smoking. That way you can look forward to good health in the New Year.

My husband was going to bring a small xmas tree in for me when I was in hospital last year but I made an escape bid on Christmas Eve and thankfully stayed out x
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

If he wants to have a smoke, tell him to go and have one, frowned upon or not. Im under the impression that he has only given up smoking for the duration of his hopital stay. Only smokers would understand why I say that so no pontifications please.

Other than that, I believe they sell something called Crave Away in chemists, its just like a pretend cigarette, it might help, I think they are only about 1.99. I feel for him.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • Thanks McKneff you understand. He is stressed anyway and has no intention of giving up good or bad its a fact. He has no telly his diet is restricted. I do have an electronic cigarette that he bought intending to give up a few months ago I will see if they agree to it but not sure they will. Of course he has capacity and can decide for himself but e doesn't like breaking rules so if they frown he will just do what he is told.

I'm not sure you can be surprised that it will be frowned upon if he's in hospital with a heart condition - perhaps a tape or book on giving up would be a suitable gift.
  • It's miserable to be in hospital over Christmas, I suppose just take him some nice little Christmassy snacks and treats and be there to spend some time with him. Can't you hire one of those bedside tv's for a week? I know they are expensive - but as a Christmas present?

On the smoking, I know it's hard to give up, I did in Jan this year and yes it just about killed me for the first month or so. However, of course, it didn't. Yet not giving up IS killing your husband - he's got a heart condition now for god's sake. I hope you took out a nice big life insurance before his heart condition was diagnosed, cos if you don't give up yourself and force him to see sense and then support him in giving up you might be able to cash it in before next Christmas. I'm not saying that as a rabid ex-smoker - god I still love the chance to stand next to someone having a fag and have a sneaky sniff of that secondary smoke and there are still times when I'd love a fag - but maybe to shock you out of what seems to be complete complacency on both your parts. My aunt died of heart diseases where smoking was believed to be a strong factor. IT's so not worth it. If you love those around you, you give up. Fags are not heroin. It takes a bit of effort, but it's not impossible.

Your husband is in hospital with a heart condition and all you want to do is make it easier for him to have a fag??? Do you have a large insurance payout on the way if he dies? Your husbands arteries are already compromised and his heart is working overtime simply to keep him alive.

You ned to stop smoking as well as smoking around him is also causing damage. Please tell me you don't have children...

I am sorry to be so harsh, but my mother died of a smoking related illness and there are no excuses to be made. you should never have started and now you and the NHS are dealing with the consequences.

I've got a FIL who won't stop smoking despite a stroke. I'm not going to pretend I understand it as a lifelong non-smoker but I do know FIL won't take any notice of people in RL inc Drs so the chances of him taking notice of people on an internet forum is nil.

My suggestion to what you've asked is for something to keep his hands busy, book, puzzles, word-searches. I hope your husband is out of hospital soon. :)

Lay off the lectures about smoking people .i am sure the OP is aware of the dangers and doesnt need you lot having a go when she is looking for ideas to cheep him up

Dress as a nurse and pull the curtains round for a quick bed bath ..better not if he has a heart condition though :D
    Have a nice day :)
