My experience of 1990s Vauxhalls was that they were mechanically robust and reliable enough, but the overall build quality was absolutely hopeless and they were more rust-prone than just about anything else on the market.

That said, the build quality issues seem to have been resolved in the later cars, and with the caveat that I wouldn't have either the late-1990s 16V engines with the poorly-designed cambelt/tensioner arrangement, or the mid-2000s Corsa 1.4s due to camshaft problems, I don't see any particular reason not to own a (petrol-engined) Vauxhall now.

(Other than the fact that you can get the same technology in a Daewoo/Chevrolet for much less money second-hand).

When I lived in Scotland many years ago I bought a Hillman Imp from a garage. I started to drive it home but half way across the Forth Road bridge smoke started coming out of the dashboard. I got out of the car and the whole vehicle was then consumed by flames.

I can categorically say that was the worst car I ever owned.

The seats. Oh my god the seats. Just awful.

I don't know how vauxhall build cars so badly to be honest. The ergonomics are just terrible. Stupid seats that you can't position, stupid indicators, Handbrakes that no other company uses because there's nothing wrong with a lever! Just cheaply build ill thought out cars, in my opinion of course. THe Meriva is the worst modern car I've driven by a long stretch, with the Zafira a close second. No handling, horrible viisbility, dull to drive until you're pressing on and then they just get dangerous. We used to crash them on purpose just so we wouldn't have to drive them when they were getting fixed.
Thankfully, we've gone back towards Fords at work now, with toyotas as the smaller cars. I still occasionally have to drive diesel corsas though, but only by force.

Have had trouble with Minis, Datson Cherry and Nissan something, Volvo, Ford Sierra, Vauxhall Nova.

My best car is the one we have now. Toyota Yaris Verso. 11 years of trouble free driving and still going strong. Little workhorse. Has never refused to start in 11 years. MOT and service has never cost more than £300. Would not buy any other car than a Toyota,

And like your vauxhall dealer must have said, "please mean it this time"
    But I doubt it.

Are you trapped in an imaginary revolving door?
How many times are you going to tell us you're leaving?
My sympathies are firmly with Vauxhall now.
(Well anyone that has to deal with you in real life)

Come on old chap, it's customary to give something up when you say you're leaving a thread.

Where did I say I was leaving the thread?
