Speaking from experience - it is usually worse under the carpet than you think and I also had to lift and bin the carpet - scrub the floor umpteen times then I had to varnish the spots with exterior varnish ( I have chipboard flooring in a new bungalow) to stop the smell and left it without carpets for a month to check that the smell was completely gone thank goodness it was and then I got a new carpet.

One of my cats has decided to use a corner of my living room as a litter tray. She is getting on a bit so I'm putting it down to old age and being a bit lazy in not wanting to go outside. I have now put a litter tray down so she is using that.

Anyway, the smell of stale urine on my carpet is getting unbearable. I've tried using shake and vac, I've used disinfectant, I've used 1001 carpet cleaner, I've left bicarb down over night but nothing seems to be shifting the smell! I was wondereing if anyone has any other suggestions as to what I can use to get rid of the smell.

    Thanks

    Sarah

    Hi,

Kim and Aggie last week had a house that had been used as a toilet by a cat for years, it was foul!! They scrubbed the floorboards, underlay, carpet etc with biological washing powder solution, dried it as best they could with cloths and then sprayed with a surgical spirit solution.

    Hope that is some help.

  • You can also try 1 part white vinegar to 4 parts water and spray on the area.

To stop your cat re-spraying the area have you tried using citrus essential oils? I did a little research and found a list of smells that cats don't like, at the time it was to stop my norty cat from shredding the sofa and we wanted to keep him away until he learnt that wasn't acceptable behaviour. I used a plant demister spray that contained a mix of the following:-

    Warm Water
    10 Drops Orange Oil
    10 Drops Lemon Oil
    5 Drops Lime Oil
    5 Drops Grapefruit Oil

It's yummy, smells a lot like opal fruits (or starbursts if you're not young enough to recall opal fruits lol). It will go cold, but you can shake it everytime you need to reapply, or keep it somewhere warm eg airing cupboard or near a radiator. Another bonus is that it smells nice, it worked so I was rather impressed. I still have a tatty looking sofa but at least it isn't getting worse. Cat's also hate garlic but using garlic oil on the sofa can be not so pleasant as the citrus essential oil mix. It will help the area smell better for a while and hopefully your cat will hate the citrus smell to and stop peeing in that area.

  • Agree with above - biological washing powder - well liquid is easier. The vet advised my mum to use this and it really works - the biological action eats the enzymes which is what causes the smell.
I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes ;)

    Hi Chops05

If your cat does this again it would be worth taking her to the vet to have her checked out. Our elderly cat started doing this adn we took her to the vet to discover the poor thing had cystitis (having had it myself, I could really sympathise).

She went on some tablets and that stopped the problem.

Cats don't like orange or lemon. Keep a bowl of oranges on a sideboard or dining table and they will stay off it. Keep a bowl of HM pot pourri with orange peel in it at any spot they favour for peeing - should ward them off.
Someone above mentioned Neutradol powder -try using talcum powder same way, works just as well and folks usually have some at the back of bathroom cupboard.
