Please can any of you help. I had a carpet given to me yesterday, which I placed, rolled up on my flight of stairs. Once I pit the heating on last night, I noticed a horrible smell of Cat Spray ( like male Tom spray). I have moved the offending carpet, but is there anyway of getting rid of the smell from my hallway, and any way of saving the offending carpet? I did look in the Mega Threads list, but could see nothing for Cat pee. Thanks in advanceA woman is like a tea bag. You never know how strong she is until she gets into hot water.:D0

Only thing i've ever found that will help to neutralise the scent is neutraldol. You can get the powder which you use like the old fashioned "shake & vac" sprinkle and leave for as long as you can. Hope this helps. If you want to get ahead in the Rat Race then you will need some faster Rats !! :rolleyes:0

We've used very diluted washing liquid before or once when the cat weed in the car on the way to the vets we borrowed a vax and vaxed the car carpets which seemed to get rid of the smell(which was overpowering).
BTW Squeaky how do you get to the MEGA INDEX please?0 -

Hi Powie
The best thing to break down the smell is a solution of warm water and biological (not non-bio!) detergent. This might be a lot of work if it's a big carpet, but if you don't have a Vax perhaps you could borrow one somewhere and use it in that?
The idea is that the biological detergent contains enzymes which break down the various elements in the cat's pee. That's why it's good for mud, blood, snot, grass etc stains.
Do a patch test before you do the whole thing (like you'd forget...)
Has the smell from the carpet transferred to something in your hall? A good airing (yeah I know it's freezing) for an hour or two should ensure the air is changed if the smell isn't coming from an object. If it is coming from stair carpet, then it's a case of washing that too. Gawd I feel sorry for ya.0 -
If you know where the stain is, wet the area, then sprinkle on baking soda and some tea tree oil. When dry, hoover up and then sponge with white vinegar to help deodorize.

A cat expert said that traditional deodorisers like disinfectant are ammonia based. To a cats sensitive hooter, this will seem as if a another cat has intruded on it's territory, so it will pee over it.
However, if it can smell it's own, it'll think that's agood spot to pee in, and do it anyway.
He recommended washing with soap powder, as another poster said, the enzymes do whatever enzymes do, then when dry wash with white spirit, as it neutralises odours, including it's own.I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.
Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.0 -
Thanks for all of your advise. The original smell was caused by the carpet we were given, which was rolled up in our hallway. We didn't notice the smell until we put our heating on. Once we did, we ended up dumping the carpet in our shed for now. The smell must have transfered onto our existing carpet, and lingered for a while.
I ended up using some bicarb, to help neutralise the smell, and then hoovered it up the following morning. I will remember the other suggestions though, should hell forbid it happens again:D .A woman is like a tea bag. You never know how strong she is until she gets into hot water.:D0 -
A bit late I know, but a friend had good results for a similar problem by cleaning with a solution containing lemongrass oil and sprinkilng some undiluted on to the carpet - it is a natural disinfectant also and does not smell too bad either.
