My Mum's cat used to pee in the vegetable basket, we worked out he was attracted by the smell of onions! Well, he was a Siamese and they're deranged at the best of times. Maybe there's something under the stairs that attracts the cat to pee in the area, could you move some stuff to the garage or loft to see if the cat loses interest?

Otherwise as suggested already put down some deterrents like vinegar or orange peel which cats don't like. Try moving the pee stained holdalls well away because if the area smells of wee he'll think it's OK to wee there again.

As for destinking the bags, get a box of bicarb from Boots and sprinkle it DRY generously inside the bags, that might soak up some of the smell. Also try hanging the bags outside on sunny days. Sadly cat pee lingers and you might need to bin them.

    Hi there

Cat Pee isn't the most welcoming smell when you come home I agree...

To get rid of it you will need a solution of warm water and biological detergent - and it must be biological to properly break down the biological mess you are cleaning up. If your bags will go into the washing machine you could just bung them in there, taking out any removable stiffening panels and so on before they go in. Obviously use the bio powder, and then the vinegar as a conditioner.

Once you've cleaned around the carpet with the bio power solution give it a once over with some surgical spirit, think it's available from most chemists. The traces of cat pee should be gone after this. Essential for your fresh air, but importantly to your cat's v.sensitive nose it'll be like she has not left you a present there and hopefully avoid the formation of an unplesant habit.

Cats like to pee in private, so maybe your kitty thinks that her former toilet area became too "public". It might be helpful to get one of those litter trays with the big lid then she will be hidden from view and put it where you choose rather than where she chooses.

do you know if this would work for dog pee, as my cat pee first and now the dog has pee on top of the cat pee? sorry to sound so stupid but ive tried carpet cleaner and that did very little to help the situation :)

Yes it should do the trick for all pee! You do of course need to be thorough. If only someone would invent dog and kitty nappies...

Would second SnowyOwl for both cat and dog pee. The biological powder breaks down any enzymes in the pee and takes away any smell (that the animal can smell but we can't) which would encourage cat/dog to pee there again. Not heard of the surgical spirit or vinegar remedies - I've only ever used Bio powder and not had a recurrent problem.

The other thing to consider is that once litter tray trained cats normally only go elsewhere (indoors) if they are stressed in some way. It maybe she needs somewhere quieter, as SnowyOwl mentioned, and as she is going happily in the tray under the stairs, that's fine, but I'd keep an eye on her, just in case something has upset her. :)

Biological detergent to break down the enzymes, then white spirit to eliminate the smell and act as a preventative.

Okay I have a gross confession to make :(

Eldest DD had a kitten, it decided to make a break for it while she was introducing it to the delights of the garden and hasn't been seen since. However because it was extremely fluffy it set dh's asthma off and had to be kept in her room for rather a long time.

As you can imagine the room stinks which isn't too great when you are showing prospective buyers around. How can I get rid of this smell without shampooing the whole carpet? She is in the attic room and there is no way I will have time to empty her room before Monday.:o

Neutrodol powder is great on wee smells. Sprinkle it on the carpet and leave it for a few hours. Hoover off and the smell should be gone.
Here I go again on my own....
