My cat also likes to pop his paws up on the side. I got one with the door and top and carbon filter like tanith but took the door out.

Of course, my cat is so spectacularly stupid that he doesn't 'get' catflaps anyway. We tried to teach him for about a year before we gave up and got a litter tray.

As my cat got older this was a regular occurance. I bought on of those toilets they have to go inside. I put newspaper on the bottom for the misses and just sat the normal litter tray inside it. It made the odd accident easier to deal with.

Try spraying the area with white or surgical spirit - that's what I suggest to puppy owners....... You do need to test a small area first though - just incase;)

We always use Jeyes fluid for this, I'm not sure if it actually does anything extra to what other people have advised though, apart from smell :)

  • We have a lovely but slightly senile cat (18 years) who is losing the plot a little about where she should or should not wee. Apart from this she is happy, very purry and well and has a good quality of life so it seems harsh to have her put down just for this.

However, the smell is awful. We have wooden floors and rugs. She has her favourite spots. Any advice on how to clean it up and get rid of the smell would be much appreciated.

Oh bless your poor senile cat.

I would try washing up liquid and water to wash it with, then spray a mixture of vinegar and water to neutralise the odour.

Never ever use bleach to clean up cat pee, to cats it smells like pee so they'll do it there again.

I had a 19 year old cat, and we had the same problem.

There is a theory that lemon or orange will get rid of the small and deter them, but the problem is the likelihood if them just finding a new spot.

We ended up with 2 litter trays, but still had accidents. Like you, I didn't think it a good enough reason to end a still happy life.

You might take a sample to the vet to rule out uti........ Soak up the excess with newspaper or kitchen roll, wash with bio washing powder solution, and when it's dry, spray with white vinegar or white or surgical spirit.

  • We also have an 18 yr old cat who has started to have the odd accident. I usually clean up with good old stardrops. I've had to give in and get an OAP litter (as the kids call it!). She's got the hang really quickly. As you say we could't "do the deed" on this alone, as other wise she is perfectly healthy.

It would be worthwhile taking your cat to the vet for a quick checkup.

When our cat started doing this we took her to the vet for a check up and found that she had a urinary problem, a bit like cystitis. The vet gave her some medication in the form of tablets she had to take for the rest of her life, and it stopped the problem.

It's very common, so I really really really encourage you to do it.

When she became arthritic, much later, we got her a litter tray.
