I have 4, youngest just about to turn 20. Two pieces of advice

    1. When they are at their worst remember "This too will pass."
    2. Pick your battles.

Don't worry too much, you survived pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding (or not), the terrible twos, potty training, first day at school etc etc. You will survive this too. Good luck.

Hmmmm yes - removal of the Internet works well with my 14 yr old - she was horrified to discover how easy it is to remove the router.
No need to remove the router. Just block her machine ;)

I was a messy cow when I was a teenager, honestly Environmental health would probably have closed my room off if they could have got a look at it. I left everything laying behind me, empty yoghurt pots, things like that for weeks on end.

 Does that mean my wife (in her mid-30's) is still going through puberty???

There's a reason the Victorians always built a cupboard under the stairs in their houses.

Thankyou for all these posts, cheered me up no end.

I'm one of those women who has never wanted children, and I've never had any. I recently divorced after 25 years, and I am now in a relationship with a lovely new man. :T We live about 60 miles apart, keep in touch daily on Skype and visit at weekends when we can.

However, he has custody of his 13 year old daughter  This is a serious lifestyle shift for me!!

His divorce has been painful in the extreme and there are still problems with his ex , all of which affect the daughter, outside of the normal problems of being 13.

She has started calling me step mum, which is lovely, and we get on really well (about 99% of the time :D). But I have no idea how to deal with the strops and crying. However there are some new ideas for me on here (thanks) and I have some idea of what it's all about now. I'll also pass this thread onto my partner, who I think is sometimes bewildered about how to deal with her. Will give him some ideas too (I particularly like the "getting up for school" one :rotfl:).

All of my posts are simply my personal opinions.

Use/chuck away all of hers and deny it. Once she is faced with having to make do with vaseline and felt tip pen, she'll soon get fed up.

Remember, if they tried any of this outside the home, the likely consequence would be a smack on the nose, so anything you do (like change the router code, change the iTunes password - which was very effective - forget to sign the permission slips for school trips 'I must have been too busy getting shouted at to remember, dear' - for example), well, they're a result compared to what it would be like in the real world.

I have two boys... one now starting the teenage years (13) and one coming out of the teenage years (18)..... I had to laugh to myself the other day...They share a bedroom and DS1 was moaning at how little respect and lots of bad manners DS2 was showing him..... I just said he had a good teacher cos thats what you were like to me at that age.:rotfl::rotfl:

Good luck, I don't envy you having a daughter through this stage of her life :D

Buy your bananas in bunches of 5 on Sunday. Then arrange them in order of ripeness and write a day of the week on each banana in felt pen, Monday on the ripest, Friday on the greenest to save time making those decisions on a hectic weekday morning
  • I have reached a point where I chuck everything of DDs into her bedroom and shut the door :D the dog is devastated it no longer has free access to her undies.

I'm working on one of the buttons she presses, the one where she looks at me and says 'you're shouting' and my reply is 'I'm not shouting, if I was you would know...BECAUSE IT WOULD SOUND LIKE THIS'
