Typically my oven broke (glass fell out of the door ) yesterday and being only days away from Xmas and all the family coming to mine and having small children to feed every day I needed a new oven quick.
Saw one on Currys website, only a cheap built in one so reserved online and sent husband off to collect it this afternoon. When he got there they tried selling him all the usual extended warranties etc and he said no he didn't want it then they told him if he didn't get there people to fit it the oven has no warranty!
Is this right? I needed the oven today not when they had time to come and fit it for us so had us over a barrel really so had to just buy it and agree to their demands as didn't have time to argue with them and find out if this was true.

It's only a bargain if you need it.

Complete and utter rubbish. The extended warranty should have a cancellation clause so get back there and get your money back.0

They don't have to offer any warranty as such but this doesn't affect your rights under the Sale of Goods Act. However I think they are !!!!!!!!ting you.0

No he didn't buy the extended warranty.
They told him he he didn't get their people to fit the oven then it would void the warranty so if it broke after 6 months we wouldn't be able to get a replacement as their people didn't fit it!It's only a bargain if you need it.0 -

That's what I thought. They were trying it on. He rang me while he was there and told me what the sales guy said!
So basically under the sales of goods act if it broke within the first year we are entitled to a replacement regardless of who installed it?It's only a bargain if you need it.0 -
Not that it matters now as the oven is now fitted but it's not the first run in I've had with Curry's, very dodgy sales tactics in my local store! It's only a bargain if you need it.0

You could fill all of Curry's distribution warehouses with the lies they will tell to get a sale and the lack of knowledge they have on consumer law.Thinking critically since 1996....0

No.
What the SOGA states is that if the oven failed within the first 6 months then the fault is assumed to be due to a manufacturing defect and the onus is on the seller to prove otherwise.
After 6 months, the buyer can be asked to show that the fault was due to a manufacturing defect and not from misuse.
If the retailer is liable then they can offer a repair, replacment or refund and the refund doesn't have to be a full one. there can be a deduction to cover the use that you have had from the oven.
The SOGA states that you have up to 6 years to try to claim from the retailer but this doesn't mean that all goods should last this period of time.
It all depends on the type of item, the price etc.0 -
Doesn't matter to me if it's refunded or repaired. Just wondered if they were lying to us about them having to install it.It's only a bargain if you need it.0

A manufacturer's (or retailer's) warranty is in addition to your statutory rights.
The warranty provider can include any conditions they like, even saying that if the retailer doesn't install it, the warranty will not be valid.
None of that means that you do not rights under the Sale of Goods Act.0 -

Yep lying - although alot of ovens say you need a spark to install it - me being trusting the manuals got the spark to do it when he was doing the other electrical work for a new kitchen - only to stand there and watch him attach blooming plug on the end and plug it in :mad:0
