    Hi there,

I booked a flight with Cathay Pacific from China to London return for which they charged me in RMB but on my bank statement it was £642.10. To my horror, they had charged me twice. So I spent ages on the phone trying to get through to their customer service in HK but to no avail. I then wrote to them via their feedback form online explaining the situation. Finally I contacted my bank firstdirect who turned out to be very helpful and put the £642.10 charge back on my account and said they would debit it from the retailer who would then have 60 days to dispute the claim.

However, now Cathay Pacific - nearly 2 weeks later, have responded to my feedback form message and have apologised and owned up to the mistake and refunded me the amount in RMB but unfortunately with the exchange rate now I've lost out £31.01. Of course I'm totally upset about this as I have lost money through no fault of my own. But if the bank or the airline don't know that either has refunded the money then my flight would have only cost £31.01.

So I'm wondering what to do, do you think I should assume that the bank will take away the credit now that I have the refund from Cathay Pacific? And should I then try and get the currency difference from them?

    OR

Should I just sit back and do nothing and hope that neither party takes the money back?

Thanks in advance for all your help!

    Lucy
  • Does anyone know how chargeback works with Paypal transactions? It seems to me that if a Chargeback is done against paypal they will just go and take the money again unless you take bank accounts and cards off your paypal account, in which case you can't use that account ever again.

Once the 45 day limit is passed if goods have not arrived you are on your own, so much for "enhanced protection" from Paypal, they have their commission after that they don't care.

I believe this is changing to 180 days from around June 17th.

That would be nice if they did!

Anyway I am going to try a bank chargeback as paypal have told me today if they get a chargeback they will take the money from the retailer's account.

Hi does anybody know if online banks like thinkmoney do the chargeback scheme. Paid for flights through edreams (a spanish company), using mastercard debit, the flights were not booked and i had to rebook at the last minute directly with the airline. I was assured a refund would be credited within 10 days. Edreams are insistent, this was refunded 4 days later to my account. It hasnt been.
  • The recent article about chargeback was extemely interesting and may be the course my son will take. He has bought a Category D write off from a dealer only to find that there are problems and it is unroadworthy and will not pass the MOT. In the article it says "It's also the case that you can't take the issue to court if your bank won't pay". I am hoping that this just means you can't take the bank to court. I may be necessary to take the dealer to court if the problems are not resolved. Any guidance on this would be gratefully received.

Not quick question but keeping it brief

Booked holiday with Tomas Cook - Paid VISA Debt
Flight cancelled - resulting in 27hour delay to destination
Spoke to BA they said seek compensation from Thomas Cook
Thomas Cook as wasting my life chasing them just keep fobbing me off .

Can I request a chargeback on my debit card for goods or services not received or something like that ???
    Arf
  • I have to claim charge back for a ticket that never arrived in the post, is there a specific address we need to write to Barclays for getting the chargeback?
  • Is it possible and likely to be successful to chargeback for a service which was originally bought as non refundable? I was due to be down south on a course, which has just been cancelled. The train tickets I had purchased were non refundable, and the theatre tickets I had bought turn out to be non refundable also, according to the vendor who I have contacted. Surely though, you're not getting the service, so in theory you should be able to get your money back, even though in the case of the train fare, the tickets were non refundable because they were cheaper?

    Thanks
  • Back in September i hired a car with Avis South Africa. On collecting the car I asked for better insurance as the excess was astronomical. They said that was the best and I have subsequently found out it wasn't so if the chargeback info I am going to give below is correct, then do you think i have a case for misselling? No fault of our own a tree from the side of the road fell on the car causing damage. we have tried to claim from the council responsible and they have refused our claim, I tried to get the breakdown of the repair costs from Avis as also astronomical and it took them till end of Nov to send through. In the meantime I complained and explained all the above to American Express as because I paid with it knew there would be some protection. When i spoke with them I did not ask specifically for section 75 or chargeback. Amex contacted Avis and asked for a breakdown. Avis did not reply. After 35days Amex initiated a chargeback as Avis had not followed Amex procedure. Avis had 45 days to dispute the chargeback and to this date Amex have not heard from Avis. I received the money back in my account from Amex and assumed this was the end of the matter. Last week I received a letter from a debt collection agency from Switzerland chasing me directly for this money. Does anyone know if this is correct. I thought that once I had received the money back that was the end of the story. Can anyone help/ advise me? CAB unable to advise. Amex say they have done as much as they have to and I have to seek legal advice??
Is this chargeback not all it is cracked up to be? Do I go to the financial ombudsman about Amex? although as far as they are concerned they have given me my money back. Would be grateful for any feedback - this is such a nightmare for me.
