Went for my Benefit Review Meeting this morning and I was so stressed because the Polish woman who does them at me JC acts very sweet but is really a little to the right of Eva Braun

turns out she was ill so I went to my advisor (who hates her) and he opened and closed the appointment on her diary to make it look as though I had the meeting

thank christ that some people at the JC are human beings
  • Can someone help me?

I was referred to the Work Programme a couple of weeks back. My local Jobcentre Plus told me that any help I need for clothes for work or interviews are now my Work Programme provider's responsibility.

I have an interview with the NHS for an admin job on Friday, 22 November 2013.
My Work Programme induction isn't until Friday, 29 November 2013.

Neither the Jobcentre or the Work Programme provider will offer me any support for my interview. I have no money coming in until after my job interview.

Q: Who's responsibility is it to help me in terms of funding for this job interview, clothes and transport wise?

    Yours.
Borrow the money needed then try to claim it back from the work program.
Although if the interview goes well you may not be in need of the work program.

    1. Maxed out overdraft because I couldn't get full housing benefits so I had to go into debt to put a roof over my head and food on the table.

    2. No one to lend money off.

    3. They will not allow me to claim back because they told me that right now I am not their responsibility because they haven't given me an induction yet, even though the Jobcentre has told me that they are responsible since the moment I was referred.

Then I'm afraid that you are plum out of luck.

As you've seen, the state does all sorts of things to help you back into work, but it doesn't (and shouldn't) do everything. On this occasion just turn up in your most appropriate clothes (and apologise if they are clearly inappropriate, explaining that money is tight). For travel, you'll need to borrow bike, hitch-hike, get a lift, or even walk.

Yes, this is not ideal, but it's what you need to do.

I totally understand where you are coming from. I personally have not experienced any state help into work myself and I do not know a single individual in this deprived and neglected region who has had any state help into work. That's not to say they don't help people in other parts of the nation, say London and Birmingham. Here, they just assume that everyone on JSA isn't interested in working, which sadly effects the ones who do want to work and need to work.

If anyone knows of any charity that may be useful in this case, not for 18-24 year olds as I am 26, then it would be massively appreciated.

Well, down here in London the government will give you money to support yourself while out of work, and provides job centres with staff to try to help you out.

It's certainly still in place in the North East, too, where the one person I know who lost their job (he found temp seasonal work in a warehouse the same week he was let go, by the way) is getting all sorts of help to get back into a permanent role.

I know that you aren't going to apppreciate this advice, but I'll give it anyway...

You will probably have better luck if you stop looking for charity, or schemes, and assume that you need to do this on your own. It gets you into a mindset that says "I can do this", rather than one that says "It's not my fault, the help wasn't there".

To be fair the state doesn't really do anything to help people back into work.

You assume to know me or my personality. I am a problem solver, to the level that allowed me to be accepted on a Mathematics degree.

Methods of getting the right clothes for this job interview:
    1. Pay for it yourself => cannot currently be satisfied as I have no money and a maxed out bank balance of -£1,600. Proceed to method 2
    2. Wait until you get money then pay for it yourself => my jobseeker's allowance isn't paid until after the date of the job interview. Proceed to method 3
    3. Find another way to get the clothes.

The state IS NOT my ideal choice, nor is charity. I am desperate, I need this job, I am qualified for this job. If I get this job I will be paying income tax into the system instead of getting benefits from the system. Make sure you know the person before passing situational judgements on them in future...
