Nose job.........

  • Yes, and so do I. But I quite understand how the prospective surgery can be seen as the solution to all of the problems. It isn't, it's just the solution to one. In my own long journey to try to look normal I was referred to a psychiatrist which I resented and gave very short shrift to. I got my place on the NHS waiting-list and was seen by the surgeon very quickly and had my surgery very quickly too.

I am also an admirer of men with big noses. For me, it adds character and strength to the features. Masculine features. On the other hand my lovely sister has a fairly big hooter but she doesn't have a particular problem with it and is and always has been a magnet to blokes. She's striking-looking but very, very attractive.

As an aside I have a male pal who was not born with a deformed ear but without one completely. It took me months to notice.
  • Thanks everyone for all your advice.

In Glasgow there are 2 hospitals that are very highly recommended which is where I will be getting my surgery I would defo not go somewhere & have surgery by some jack of all trades!

I am going to spend next year getting consultations which my OH will be coming to & then have the surgery in early 2013.

  • I have another consultation tonight - slowly but surely gathering all the info I need so I can make my decision on which surgeon to choose.

  • I must have missed this thread when it was first posted.
I had a nose job around 10 years ago. Have to say, it was the best money I ever spent!
The op was done privately in a Nuffield Hospital, but I asked my GP to make the referral, rather than ringing companies like Transform. The consultant surgeon I used did a lot of reconstructive work for the NHS in our area so I felt very comfortable with him.

Hope tonight's consultation goes well, OP.
From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!
  • Well the surgeon I had my mini consultation with last night does a lot of work at Canniesburn Hospital doing rescontructive surgery for head & neck cancers.

It was very promising - he had an open night at his clinic to talk about all the procedure he does & gave a free mini consulation.

I'm gonna book a formal consulatation with him in the next few weeks but he said it will be quite extensive & I will need an open rhinoplasty but I will get lots more information when I go back cos it will be a full hour I will get!

    I'm so excited!!!!!!!

  • Sounds like you're taking lots of time and care to find the right surgeon for you :-)
The one thing I do remember the nursing staff telling me, before I went to theatre, was that the stomach can't tolerate blood so expect to vomit a bit as I was bound to swallow some, and they were right! That might have been down to the anesthetic, though LOL
I must admit I didn't look at myself in the mirror for a couple of weeks, and I was told that the black eyes and bruising was pretty bad. By the time the packing and splint came off, though, it was mostly gone and there was only a little swelling.
I have a few red thread veins on my nose, which I put down to the op, but it's a small price to pay.
From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!
  • My OH had a septorhinosplasty due to it being broken years ago, he had it in october last year, it was done without taking the tip of the nose back, its an extremely invasive proceedure, you will be subsceptable to MRSA because the nose arms pits groin and throat are all propper breeding gounds for it.

your nose will take, approx 12-18 months to heal the first 6 months will determin the outcome, knock it youll re break it pushing everything out of line risk deviating the septum or detaching the splint they put in to raise the tip. expect headaches, swollen throat, and a swollen nose for approx 12 months, black eyes for 3-4weeks, and bleedy nose periodically if they have to do any side entry proceedures external to the nose, expect to have small scarry lumps in the incision sites for around 6-14 months.

the nose pack is the worse thing you could ever ecperience up your nose after surgery, this is removed after the first day and is extremely painfull on removal, here dried blood can attach to the stiches inside the nose and glue the packs to the stiches, nurse pulls too quickly and hey presto she'll take the stiches out and youll have to have a local anesthetic in the nose to have them put back in. youll have a cast over your nose you wear for 10-15 days, this obscures your view so you cannot drive with this on! youll be given a pack of nose plugs plasters that sits under the nostrels to help with the bleeding.

you will not be able to breath through the nose, and as a result not be able to sleep properly untill the swelling has subsided enough to allow enough air in- to go into a deep sleep as normal.

youll have clots after the 14 days are up and a extremely runny nose for a few months try not wipe it youll undo all the surgeons work, think of a 100 year old porcelein dolls face with all those tiny cracks in it, your nose will be like that under the skin, too much pressure wiping your nose will possibly shatter the nose bone and no operation in the world can correct that think of micheal jackson and thats how you could possibly look as a result of a shattered nose collapsed nostrals and thin structure.

sense of smell. not strictly atributed as a loss due to a rhinoplasty (but always a risk) underlying conditions can cause loss of smell, over grown turbanits is one cause.

points to ask at your full consultation, check for any over growth of turbanits and other over growths, and bone and have these shaved away if they are present, check your septum for any deviations, detachments from bone at the bridge and nasal valves a rhino plasty should never be performed if the risk of compramising the nasal valves and airflow is too great.

good luck and take your time on whether you actually need to have a rhinoplasty or just a septo plasty to correct the tip of the nose to bring it into line they both have different operation and different outcomes..
soon to be MRS ATRIXBLUE date set august 2012. diet set, start 17s.5lbs goal 11-12st by time my wedding hits.

Just found this thread - and was wondering how you're getting on Dolly Rocker? Have you decided on who you're going to go with yet? I went to Transform for a consultation a few weeks ago but after further research both on the company and the surgeon they suggested, I decided they definitely weren't for me! I have another consultation in mid June - I think it's probably with the same man you saw at the open evening ;) and I'm feeling much more positive about him :)

Thanks Person-one for your input, it's so refreshing to hear from somebody who really understands what it's like! What it's like to "feel" your nose all the time, like every nerve ending is hypersensitive. I'm nearly 40 and have been teased about my nose for 30 years, it just so happens that I've got lucky and finally have the means to do this. Yes it's expensive, yes it will take time to repay, but the pay off in terms of increased confidence and not feeling so horribly self conscious ALL the time (even in front of family!) will be priceless. And over the years I could gain more financially from that than I'm paying for the op :)

Hi - I've got my consultation with Mr Shoaib on the 13th June this year:j:j They said the op would probably be 6-8 weeks after that, I'm impatient but hey I've waited 30 years so I'm sure I can manage another couple of months lol! It's hard to find much info about surgeons but I've only seen good stuff about him and he is a member of the relevant professional bodies so I'm feeling pretty confident that I will end up going ahead with him :) Who are you seeing tonight? xxx
