EXTRA £100 on my ORANGE BILL!

Hi all,

First of all, sorry if my English is not perfect, I'm French.
I'm with Orange (and that for years) and I use a iPhone 3G. For the past few months, Orange charged me an average of £25 extra every month for downloading huge amount of data (I have 500MB on my contract and for example, they say I dowloaded an extra 4025MB!...). I have no clue where it might come from; I've been careful the past month though even if I have never done anything 'mad' with my phone... but still! I understand that I might misuse my phone (I doubt it but that what Orange wants to make me think!).
Now, the annoying thing is that Orange can't help me investigating with the origins of the data - I wanted to know when in the day, the amount of data was high, to figure out if it was happening when I was at work or at home (and therefore a problem with the wi-fi). They can't give me the information.
I'm very upset as for the past three months, I've paid an extra £100 on something I haven't used and Orange don't want to sort it out with me.

Is there anyone here who can help me giving me advice?
That would be much appreciated!

Merci:))

I use a smartphone and there are lots of apps you can download than monitor your data usage, I'm sure you must be able to get something similar for the iPhone.

  • Thanks for the tip. Indeed, I recently downloaded Onavo to check and so far, the download seems very normal,... but obviously, what I can't check is the previous months' data:(
  • What apps are you using? iPhones and big bills go hand in hand.
when you download an app it doesn't just run when you use it, it sits there running in the background, updating and downloading. So even though you don't think you're using data, your iPhone is doing it for you.

The first point is as per hundreds of other posts you have used the data thats what Smartphones do .

Just checking my non IPhone smartphone and in two hours the downloads are .5MB without me actually downloading anything its just apps connecting as they do . All on WiFi as it happens but DATA is |Turned OFF unless required on my phone .

A large download suggests a possible update or videos /You Tube usage .

On my android phone you can turn off background data to stop apps downloading stuff in the background - can you do something similar on an iphone? Also turn off auto-updating/syncing on everything you can.

No they don't. My data usage has never gone over 500MB in the 18 months I've had mine.

It's nothing to do with it being an Iphone and everything to do with the user loading data intensive apps, or watching you tube / on demand TV.

The make of phone has nothing to do with it.

How about using mobile data even when on WiFi or abroad with data roaming switched off?

I don't have any personal experience with this. My comment is based only on what I have read here.
  • First of all, I'm a regular iPhone user. Not geeky but not totally stupid.
Secondly, as said previously, I installed Onavo and so far, what it shows me is a total normal download of data and I'm using my iPhone as usual... so if I had a dodgy app downloading huge amount of data, it would show me.
And the amount of extra data is HUGE! If it was an app, surely, other users would have found out too.
At the end of the day, what I'm looking for is a basic detailed list of downloaded data from Orange,... to know when things go wrong (if it's when I'm at work, at home, outside, etc.). Orange hasn't been helpful at all and they don't give a monkey I have to pay that extra money, obviously:(( I don't think it's fair.
Onavo will show I'm not doing anything wrong but will Orange take that in account?!
  • you have to make sure all notifications are turned off aswell even if youre data is off they update on their own using up data the iphone is a bit more difficult with its settings i find than normal smartphones

Sorry my point wasn't that they can't generate a large data bill but it's not just iPhones that have a huge data bill it can be any smart phone.

There are cases of all phones running up large bills, so to say that iphones and large bill go together is wrong, it should be all smartphones and large bills can go hand in hand..
