Until they price themselves out of the market. Driverless trains get to be more viable every time the union decide to flex their muscles. Look what happened to the print trade in the eighties.
Ronald Reagan proved there is an answer when he sacked over 11,000 striking American air traffic controllers in 1981.
New people were hired and trained. No lives were lost. The ransom stopped.0 -

I've seen many care homes, where often the staff are fantastic but the owners couldn't give a toss about either the staff or the people being looked after.
Works for a charity, is in Unison who do not give a toss unless you are public sector.0 -

absolute scum generally, but in today's climate it is beyond parody.
anyone who doubts that the week before the olympics start they will demand 250k a year for life is mad.
they are greed personified.
i despise them.
sack them all and rehire them on 18k which is what they deserve.
Better still, replace them with robots or, failing that, automated trains.
In a way, their attitude reminds me of that of irresponsible people in the financial sector, though it's perhaps worse because they are taking excessive amounts of money from hard-working taxpayers, who often do much more demanding work for far less pay – and in addition are having to put up with hostile action against them initiated by the unions.
Unfortunately, it is the unions that bear a large responsibility for this country having become so uncompetitive in the world that much of our traditional industry has disappeared. I remember the number of strikes there were in the 70s, for example – seemed as though everyday there was someone downing tools. Such actions probably killed off a lot of British companies and ultimately gave rise to the 'entitlement culture' we have today among certain sections of the population.0 -

In which case it is normally a day off for the rest of the rail network and a bank holiday to boot.
If YOU were forced to work (ostensibly it's a day off remember) on Boxing day I take it you'd go in for normal pay would you?
When I last worked New years day I got 3 x pay and a day off in lieu too, none of my staff would work for normal pay and they'd think me nuts for asking them to.
No I wouldn't go in for normal pay (it's idiotic of you to suggest that), although I wouldn't expect quadruple pay either.
Back when I was working full time and running two businesses I rarely had a day off and because one of my businesses was racecourse bookmaking, I routinely worked bank holidays.Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0 -
London Tube drivers are the perfect example of an effective union.
You're right. And like all powerful and effective unions, the logical and eventual consequence of their actions will be the automation of their function and the elimination of their jobs.
Nice work, guys :j
I support Bob Crow and his union members. I really do. Everytime they make one more ridiculous claim or demand, everytime they try to hold London to ransom, it's just another nail in their coffin and eventual demise. Each time they raise their shrill entitlement voices, the normal member of public becomes more and more against them. It's wonderful to watch them in action.
Does any remember Arthur Scargill and the NUM?0 -

I always wonder how long the pits would have gone on for if there was no strike or closure plan in the 80's. Can you imagine them today in this environmental climate? All the hippies that were protesting with the miners to keep them open and all the "occupy" crusties would be the same people demanding there closure.
Bendix is right- every strike and demand by the drivers union is another nail in it's eventual coffin.0
