Last time I worked Christmas day (which also happened to be my eldest son's first Christmas), I got paid my normal hourly rate and no days off in lieu.
This year Christmas Day and New Years Day are on Sunday so they aren't officially bank holidays. If you have an employment contract which says you work shifts including Sundays then your employer can expect you to work 25 Dec and 1st Jan for your normal pay, as they aren't bank holidays! We've been through this at our place, I have colleagues working on Chrstmas day for normal Sunday pay.
Maybe they should try this with the tube drivers...0 -
I would have thought that driving a bus was more difficult, more stressful and much more involved than driving a tube. Why the hell is a tube driver "worth" nearly twice as much as a bus driver?
Yes I never got this - same with train drivers who are well paid. Driving a bus is surely a much higher skilled job.0 -
as you know, i hate the unions - BUT - if the tube and rail scum are getting more, then why not the bus drivers? the point is they should ALL have got NOTHING other than the sack and possible prison if they didn't turn up for work. these pond life scum suckers are everything that is wrong with the public sector and the rest of the unionised industries. look at BA flight attendants - greedy scum already paid about 100% more than their peers, yet they continue to strike. why? because invariably they win.
as a citizen of London, i would be quite happy for the tube to close for 3 months if it crushed this greedy dirt into the ground once and for all. also, think of all the repairs and updates they could do during that period.
a few montsh of pain for a lifetime of gain. DO IT, DO IT, DO IT.0 -
I dont hate the Unions, I think workers do need Unions to look after their interests, but in cases like this where the Unions try to hold the employers to ransom I think they do more harm than good to their cause. They may get away with their demands now but in the long term it is just another nail in their coffin and a few years down the line when the employers are in a position to dictate terms due to better technology and driverless trains etc. the Unions will complain that the employer has no thought of the workforce and moan about how they refuse to negotiate. Well when that happens just remember these times when the Unions are demanding things without negotiation.0

Maybe if the people who worked in the care sector unionised and were all prepared to go on strike their pay and conditions would be better.
You have answered your own question really. No union, not prepared to strike equals very poor pay and terms of employment for most workers. Don't wish it on others who are prepared to be in union and fight for better pay and conditions. Your missus should join a union if she hasn't already done so.
She is in Unison, they are not interested in anyone who is not public sector. Possibly because they believe that the public sector has an endless supply of money.
As far a not prepared to strike goes, would you be happy to see very vulnerable people suffer and possibly die for a few extra quid a week?0 -

I don't think the unions would give a damn in fact I recon they would use it as publicity, look what happens if you don't pay our ransom.

Can we possibily remember what unions do for people away from the high-profile stuff? At the heart of things a union is there to protect and help employees in times of stress. The union reps that help people in times of strife are good people.
Nope they used to be for the good of the working man and I have no issues with anyone being in a union (although I think if your not in th PS its a waste of money).
Now they are just an extension of the Labour party, with plenty of unionised PS workers dragging their heels over Gov changes for political reasons.
Anyway back to the thread and NO support for tube drivers so far.0 -

True, but I would suspect there is an amount of the NUM and ASLEF trying to prove who is the hardest in this case.
Virtual quadruple time on a salary approaching 50k for working boxing day is ridiculous.
I would suspect a lot of time and effort is now being put into the viability of driverless trains due to these actions.0 -

This in incorrect. Union members will currently be going through employment issues and union reps will be supporting them in that process.0
