Many thanks for your comments...... Whilst I accept that Comet didn't have to take back the goods, I still feel that a such a large company could offer a better returns policy. In view of my experience and taking on board all the comments posted, I think that in future, I will shop at retailers who consider their returns policy as an integral part of their overall service provision .....!!!!
What I had hoped to achieve was; after considering all the information given, people could make an informed decision on where they wanted to buy electrical goods......0 -
I'm not defending Comet with this, but I can sort of understand their economics of doing it. For the sake of arguement, suppose something retails generally at £100. That £100 includes say, 10% returns. If the restocking charge was £10 then the company could either sell 100 at £100 (=£10,000), and offer free restocking (10 x £10 = £100, and therefore net sales =£9,900), or they could sell the item at £99 (=£9,900) and just charge for restocking when someone returns it.
So the cost of restocking is either built into the selling prices (as is theft, staff wages & rest of the company's costs), or, applied as & when incurred by the customer.From MSE Martin - Some General Tips On Holiday Home Organisations and Sales Meetings

you do have the right to return the goods under the current laws
but Comet have a big - nicely worded sign on the wall which is bull according to trading stabdards
you can REJECT the goods in 14 days but they are a pain
dont buy from comet

That's complete rubbish. Nobody has any legal right to return any non-faulty item which is bought from a shop. Any retailer offers to refund are entirely discretionary.0 -
The 14 day rule only applies to distance selling, not items you have yourself gome inot a shop to buyBaby Ice arrived 17th April 2011. Tired.com! :j0

A better returns policy !!! hang on if the item is not faulty then you have no rights to return it for a refund, you mean a returns policy you like!!! If you have opened it and therefore return it, it becomes second hand. do you want to pay full retail for a second hand item, NO so dont complain if they charge a restocking fee as they could turn round and say no to the refund in the first place and the law will still be on their side."Save the cheerleader - Save the world"0 -

Looking at it another way,you are lucky they agreed to take it back at all.However,thanks for the warning. In future i wont just ask if the store will do a cash refund if I change my mind,I will ask if they do a FULL cash refund.0
