Okay, point taken. But what if someone put them on a windowsill, which is their intended purpose, if it burned my sofa, surely it waould burn curtains too?

I still wouldn't leave xmas lights on if I go out
My other half was in, but not in the room.

TBH, they might try to argue that you hadn't placed the lights on a stable surface or something like that. Any bulb can get hot enough to melt or burn fabric/leather if it comes into contact with it - your claim rests on being able to demonstrate that they shouldn't have fallen over.

Here's another scenario... my cat jumped up and knocked over the candle arch. I was in another room at the time and didn't realise that the hot bulbs were touching the sofa and they burnt it. Is Tesco to blame?

Or how about, the wind blew through an open window and the lights fell over....

Okay, i just tested it and it would seem that it is faulty. I only brought it on saturday, and three of the bulbs are now black, none of the lights are working, and there is smoke coming out of one of the bulbs.

Do you think the design is structurally unstable?
I assume there were no drafts or pets etc that could have an impact?

No, no pets to knock it over

Just looked on the bottom, and there are large dolops of glue on each end, making rock quite a bit too.
  • you need your insurer, tesco may replace the arch if its faulty, but no fault i can think of will make it stand up, and move over to your sofa, lie its self down and burn your belongings.

i wonder if the arch has been damaged by being burn't on your sofa.

Take it back to Tesco with a quote for repairing the damage to your sofa and point out that poor quality manufacture means it's potentially unstable and, indeed, it fell over and burnt the sofa. Ask them to pay the repair bill and give you your money back for the candle arch. Shoot them if they don't comply.
