Just thought I should add an update to say I decided I am not going.
I did eventualy received a message on my answerphone from the leader yesterday to ask me to make our choices from the 3 course menu, but I txt them back to say sorry I am unable to come to the meal now as we are going away for the weekend.
They responded today with ok have a nice time.
I then explained about the secret santa gift and asked if they knew the persons address for me to drop it round to them later on next week, but they dont know where they live, so thats now beyond my control sadly.
I then tried to contact another person from the group, who I know is going tomorrow, to ask them if I dropped off the secret santa gift and money for X would they be kind enough to take it with them and pass it on for me please as I was not going now. I still havent had a reply!
I could contact X and ask them to take the gift and pay them my reimbursment at the same time, but as I am now supposed to be away for the weekend it is too late so I will just have to leave it and try and find out the secret santa address next week.
I was looking foward to going to the meal but the closer it got the less I thought I can afford it to be honest, so close to Christmas. Plus hubby wasnt overly enthusiastic anyway. That and the fact I have a family meal to attend away from home on Sunday as well (no not entirely lying when I say I am away for the weekend, just its for 1 day) and I have Weight Watchers weigh in first thing Monday morning so if there is any consolation it will hopefully be the reward knowing I havent tipped the scales from too much food in 1 weekend !
Thanks all for the advice, its been apreciated.
Failure is only someone elses judgement.
Without change there would be no butterflies.
If its important to you, you'll find a way - if not, you'll find an excuse ! ~ Easy to say when you take money out of the equation!

Sounds like you've sorted it.
To be honest, I don't go to any of the groups I belong to Christmas meals except my work one, which is a pub lunch costing £6 this year. I just can't afford it, especially as I belong to 3 badminton clubs, a running club and have friends from another club I used to go to and some college friends who all like to meet up at Christmas. Also a select group at work have started going out at Christmas in addition to the pub lunch..... that's potentially 8 Christmas meals!! They do all understand why I don't go when I explain it like that!
In your shoes I'd have sent a message to the leader explaining I hadn't been able to book and as no one had replied to my messages I'd given up and made alternative arrangements. I would make an effort to deliver the secret santa and the £3 to someone else who was going, but I wouldn't break my back over it.
Have a nice weekend!0 -
To be honest I wouldn't bother going, it doesn't sound as if any of the people in the group are close friends as nobody seems to know where anyone else lives and phoning or texting seems to be ignored for the most part.:(
You say yourself that you won't be going to the group anymore so I would personally just draw a line under the whole thing and stop fretting about it.:)1 Sealed Pot Challenge # 1480

You made the best choice. Your group leader sounds a bit of a pain in the neck with not bothering to answer any of your messages. For the person whose secret santa you have, there will be the one bought for you left over, so they could have that one.
A suggestion too late for you, but it might help others- as there was no time to collect money, on the night you could have together paid for her night, or up to an agreed value depending on how much and what she likes to drink:)weight loss target 23lbs/49lb0 -

A group that bonds in one setting can fall apart when not bound by the usual regime of the group. Sounds like the "leader" hasn't done much leading. They should have totally taken charge - no wonder the restaurant was hacked off.
You've made your decision, I would have made mine based on if I wanted to have the closure of that final farewell and just turned up. With a group as big as 40 there are bound to be some last minute cancellations and the restaurant would have found you a place, but you've made your decision now anyway. We Made-it-3 on 28/01/11 with birth of our gorgeous DD.0
