Change barrel of lock , replacement costs about 8 quid and its pretty straightforward. Keep original to put back at the end of the tenancy.
You could also send a formal letter to LL reminding him that he has to give a min of 24 hours written notice if he wants access to the property ( note that it's okay if you need to change the time/date to a mutually convenient one.) and that letting himself in by key is not acceptable to you.
It's more subtle to just sort the lock - the only way he would know this had been done was if he tried to gain access again.
What was the purpose of his visit btw?
If he continues to try to gain access you'll perhaps need the local Council's private sector TRO to have a chat with him.0 -
he was coming to clean some mould of the kitchen window but had no notice0

Did he give a reason for entering the flat? I would be looking for a new flat ASAP - I worked in letting for over 7yrs and NEVER EVER would we enter a flat without tenant consent unless
1. Flooding - either to/from the property.
2. Lengthy non contact - therefore possibility of tenant absconding. 1st attempt would be note through the door requesting contact with 48hrs.
I would also wonder why he still entered the flat when no one answered. Was he hoping no one would be in? I know this is creepy but makes me shiver just to think about it!!!!0 -

Although clearly within your rights to refuse access, why on earth did you do so? Loft insulation = cheaper heating bills.0 -
would_be_FTB wrote: »That's what he said, yeah right, so he's going out of his way to help us, I know what landlords are like it's probably something to do with him getting a grant or something, he'll be making money out of it somehow, but we sure put a stop to that.
We said he could do it if he let us live rent free for one month, guess what? Yep! sure enough he didn't want to know about it then!
Yes, he probably was getting a grant, but it still doesn't mean that your bills wouldn't be cheaper.
I had a guy do mine, took him 20 mins to take the stuff up there and he was gone in an hour. Job done.If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -

It will actually benefit YOU as much as him. Unless he is paying all the heating bills of course. If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -
Would_be_FTB: you are a fool.
OP: please send your letter to the landlord tout suite and then change the barrel of the lock as soon as you can buy one.0
