horse and carriage for a wedding.

I looked into it to do it as a surprise thinking it would be £150 or so

All we wanted it for was to go from A to B 500 yards.

Cheapest £550, dearest £950.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

  • Yeah you wouldn't get a wedding car for £150, so a horse and carriage is bound to be dearer. They have you over a barrell for weddings and funerals.

tbh its not the a-b 500 yards that the price is for, its the fuel/tax/ etc for their lorry to a and back from b, the person driving the carriage and possibly another person for lorry/footman or grooming, and the keep for the horses all the rest of the time. whether it 500 yrds or a couple of miles, its the time spent polishing harness and carriage and horse/s the day before and in the morning.

I hope the wedding goes well and you all have a good day, with or without horse and carriage :)
  • Yes, these are expensive. The distance you want to go makes very little difference to them though - it's not like a taxi :).

It's also more expensive to run this service than a car service - imagine a car that needs
petrol every day whether it is driven or not, (feed)
new parts fitted every 6 weeks whether it is driven or not (shoes)
someone to spend an hour a day looking after it whether it is driven or not
    and so on (groom)
large garage and min 1 acre yard hired or bought for it (stable and grazing)
to be brought to the wedding and back on a car transporter lorry (big expensive horse box to fit horses and carriage in)
    etc etc etc
    and you can see why.
Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j

Thanks, I think we'll kick that one into touch.

Thinking cap back on or a novel procession with Her, Dad and 3 adult bridesmaids walking the streets of York.

Need ideas also please, we have two little boys, (not page boys) dressed in jesters outfits, (its a sort of medieval theme) and
ideas we could put two little girls in.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Bo Peep type stuff ? Adult bridesmaids in Nell Gwynne type stuff with their dumplings boiling over?
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

That looks as if it would be brilliant, but not sure about the colour, I'll pass it on to the 'bride' the colour of the brides dress is grape,
bridesmaids not sure yet, early days, dress viewed today, first dress she tried on and we both fell in love with it.

Gotta mention it, Curvy Brides, Boroughbridge, one of a kind, sizes 6 to 36. Lovely ladies in there, know exactly what they are talking about.

  • Grape, how lovely. What's her budget like? Gorgeous bridesmaids dress here in grape on sale but still bit expensive:

  • To be honest, depending how practical the dress is, I love the idea of a bridal party walking through the streets of York. It would look almost magical.
However, re horse and carriage, have you tried asking the men giving the tourist rides outside the minster? The carriages may not be as pretty as the ones costing £500+ but we once arranged transport this way. we went about a mile and, having booked in advance, it cost us about £60 for 4. I'm sure some ribbons could be thrown on, just an idea.

I was going to say similar to the above. Try this lot http://www.britishdrivingsociety.co.uk/ for professionals close to the location. They may not be 'wedding' carriages.. But you may find someone who would love to do it.
Still looking for the plot...... Anyone seen it???
