I have been told before that I don't walk my two but as I have no garden I am not sure what people think I do with them..The reason behind someone saying it was because I get up at 6am and go out straight away for over an hour and get back when everyone is only just getting up ( if that) and then again in the evening for a long walk.
You can not possibly watch someone all day and as for the comment about how the jacky acts when out, mine is walked each day as I said and you would still think it is all brand new for him and he is 5 years old. He calms down once out of the field but is a pain until then.

OK the majority appear to think that she walks the dogs, even though I and others know different. Just wanted a bit of advice so I'll leave it at that and not do anything.

No I think what we actually said was that are you 100% sure that she doesn't walk the dogs becuase unless you are in 100% of the time how do you know this for sure.

If you feel that a call to the RSPCA is warranted then ring them - I think we would all rather an animal be protected from abuse than leave it at risk

No, I think they are asking you are you watching 24/7 to see if they do walk the dog? I often walk mine very early and very late during the week, and this time of year curtains are drawn and nobody is out - it could be assumed that I don't walk my two either (although they do have a garden to play in anyway). I would be looking at the dog for other things - is he thin/overweight/aggressive/nervous and scared/what does his coat look like... etc.

I couldn't agree more,please,k66yla, do what your conscience and eyes and ears are telling you. Those poor dogs, what a miserable life, cooped up in a flat.I still believe it is an environmental issue, especially where there are children,as well as a welfare one for the dogs.

My friend had a staffie that was never walked...his whole world was the tiny back garden. Someone did call the RSPCA and they came out, checked the dog over and said he was obviously well looked after, and that was that.

My fiend's defence was that she works full time, 8am till 6pm, and doesn't have time to walk the poor dog. I would have thought if you have a dog at all, you MAKE time!

Sorry, I meant friend, not FIEND!!
  • The RSPCA won't do a thing I'm afraid. I have a Japanese Akaita next door to me and he never sees the outside of his tiny garden which is filled with mess and stinks so bad that we can't bear to sit on our garden in the summer. The dog is never walked and is left out in the rain and cold with no shelter but because the woman of the house is in all day they can easily make excuses (the dog was only out a minute, the back door blew shut etc etc). I take my dog out everyday for at least 2 hours and I feel horrible walking past this poor dog as he looks over the fence.

Everyone in the neighbourhood knows what's happening and most people have a treat in their pocket for him every time they walk past. He's a gorgeous dog who is obviously stressed by lack of exercise or stimulation and he'll suffer later in life (if he even gets much of a life). The day I move out of this house I'll be dropping them a note and taking that dog with me.

Although you know what is going on, it'll be their word against your's and unless the dogs look like they're in bad condition then the RSPCA won't be able to do a thing.
  • My friend's parents had a Newfoundland that never got out of the tiny, concrete garden until the poor sod died of a heart attack at an early age (which was probably a blessed relief for her).

If you can't properly care for animals you shouldn't have them but human stupidity and selfishness knows no bounds.

That is so sad, poor dog.I know it's not your responsibility but have you ever thought of offering to take it out when you take yours? Might just nudge the owner into some action, though i doubt it.

Staffs get a bad reputation because of people like the ones talked about above, we have a staff cross that's walked three to four times a day, at least two of them an hour or more. Either my partner or myself get up at 7am before work to make sure the dog gets it's chance to exercise and we meet up with other dog walkers which gives the dogs chance to play and learn to be around other dogs. I know what our dog is like if he misses a couple of walks, I can't imagine how stressed he would be if he didn't get any exercise at all and even though he's the most placid dog in the world, I'd be nervous letting any stressed dog be around children... let alone a dog as powerful as a staffie... it is a recipe for disaster and another excuse for a headline.
We took our dog on knowing full well that he needed walking, feeding and looking after, but we've gained by being fitter, meeting lots of new people and having that companionship around the house... if you don't want to take on the responsibility or even get the pleasure from having a dog I don't understand why you would get one in the first place. Choosing a staff to abuse in this way is just asking for trouble and it pains me that the authorities change the rules for these breeds when something happens but do nothing to prevent it pre-emptively.
    Rant over! ;-)
