I personally have yet to meet anyone who has retired at 50, let alone 40. As it stands now, I will have to work till I'm 68 before I retire, although this will probably rise by the time I get there, so 66 sounds a good deal. You say you fund pensions.......do you know this for a fact..?? I have no idea where my tax goes......it could be going to fund wars, the NHS, overly generous state benefits, new roads.......anything.........Public sector workers get a pension because they pay into them themselves, potentially fund the rest through their own Tax, and also enjoy lesser pay than the private sector, no pay rises, no bonuses or perks that other private sector workers can get. If people think public sector pensions are so generous then why don't they get a job in the public sector........just like people that think teachers holidays are generous....why didn't they become a teacher?
Rant over!!!!
Public sector pensions are not funded like private sector pensions. Private sector pension contributions for both members and employers are invested in stock market equities, bonds etc. Everyone is aware that returns on these have taken a big hit in the last few decades and can no longer sustain private sector pensions at the previous rates. Public sector contributions are not invested so there is no pot to take them out of. They are paid out of dwindling tax revenues. Current public sector contributors pay for the pensions of those already retired in the public sector.
I worked in the private sector in a responsible scientific role that often saw me working 7 days a week and evenings and required a PhD. I got a good final salary pension but it was gradually downgraded over the final 10 years as the "pot" was diminishing. Simple sustainable economics in these times.
OH was a florist and ran their own successful business (24/7 life) for 25 years but eventually went into teaching for a better lifestyle, more money and a pension.
DD is a primary school teacher aged 30. Works hard but no harder than myself or OH. In the last year has bought a brand new car, holidayed in Guadeloupe in February half term, spent 6 week summer break in Thailand, Laos, Vietnam etc and is currently shopping in New York. I don't begrudge her that but can;t see how public sector workers think they are different to the rest of us, are special cases or are underpaid.
As you can see I think I have a background to see both sides.Awaiting a new sig0 -

Now there's a thing, so many posts relating to drinking /the late night pub on this thread...... not all of us particularly enjoy wading through pages of those posts!!
I guess that's very true for some:) There,s always the MoneySavers Arms I suppose but it's not a very select bar:)
There's lots of stuff on this thread that has no relevance or interest to me but it doesn't bother me. It;s what makes this thread what it is.Live and let live and give anyone that has something to say a fair hearing without prejudice:cool:Awaiting a new sig0 -
