BTW oven thermometers are only a few pounds to buy and are really handy to have
I know, I've got two ovens identical and ones much quicker than the other and I have just thought, I've used the quicker one. Right I'm going to skewer test it after 3 hours, executive decision:T:T:T:TBeware!!!! Glitching is addictive:rotfl:0 -

No worries. For anyone who hasn't baked theirs yet, my top tip...
Get some newspaper and fold it into longs strips. If your cake tin is, for example, 2" high, then make the strips a little smaller. Make them so that they are the equivalent of about 5 or 6 sheets thick, then soak them in water. Before you put the tin (with the mixture) in the oven, carefully wrap the newspaper around the outside of the tin and attach securely with something like a metal paperclip (no plastic etc). This will help the cake to cook more evenly and not go crispy round the edges while still soggy in the middle. Don't let the paper be higher than the outside of the tin. Makre sure the paper isn;t touching the top or sides of your oven, and if you have a flame at the back of the oven, obviously be careful that the paper doesn't come unclipped etc.
The other thing you can do is put water in a baking tray at the bottom of the oven (below the cake level) to create steam as this also stops it from drying out. Let it cool in the oven before you try to remove it though so you don't burn yourself (the water tray not the cake).

Hi all, newbie here
Managed to get my first 1p bargains today thanks to this thread, 26 Lucozade Alert on the strips, 6 packs of Harrys salted cashews and a pack of beef nuggets. Will be keeping my eye out for bargains and will post if I find any.
Pic below of my finds ( maybe not, how do you post pics? ), I also managed to get some Lynx bullets and Andrex.0 -
