Life after Heat Pump-Cold

Hi graham2003, I wish I could see all the performance Data for all manufacturers systems then I probably wouldn't be so harsh on the majority of systems out there, you are right though, (with some installers sometimes out of their depth (no experience, just going by the number of poorly performing installations).
As for defrost cycles, each manufacturer has it's own mechanism, and if the system is designed to include this, then there should be no problem, (my own system defrosts due to our cold wet ambients but we are still very warm.....there is no electrical backup, and no other fuel). There are three types of people in this world...those that can count ...and those that can't!

Geo, light on programmer live from what I remember has never been on, and I'm not too sure how this is activated or what it actually signifies. Certainly from the heat pump, there dosn't seem to be anything that states a switch to activate it?
I've got 4 versions of manual one version M and also version N plus two others? however, the guys who provided all the info used gerenic drawings/manuals that sometmes caused a great deal of problem as they were not sometimes related to the delivered parts. This definately led to problems with electric installation where sparky was using drawings that didn't in fact match and led to all sorts of problems that I still I not sure are totally correct. Re the rads these are Stelrad I think K3 for 'low energy system'. They are all fitted with thermostatic valves, not sure if these are the same as bypass valves.
We've got 300 litre HWT and 150L buffer tank both of which also have expansion tanks.
Seems like all the bits are here, and heat pump is working............but it's still cold.
Ok. Let's try to take it a little further. If you press the "p" button on the controller, can you access the setup as in f,g in the manual. If so then go through the test functions.
If the programmer does not light, then you could have a supply problem to it.As Manuel says in Fawlty Towers: " I Know Nothing"0 -
The company who we contracted the system with were MCS credited, and seemed/were a big company.
Whilst it is fine to say just turn the the system off at 5C, and install a wood burner.....this surely cannot be the point.
Our house is H shaped with the middle linking section single storey and the other legs two storey, so, maybe we should have four wood burning stoves.
The question then, can we get a heat pump to work for our dwelling to a -15deg temperature?
What happens where similar units are installed in other European countries where they have been used more commonly?
And if they don't work, why are they being sold at all?0 -

I could answer your subsequent question, but guess what, I don't think I'll bother.0 -

They build better houses than us...........and are prepared to listen and learn.:eek:There are three types of people in this world...those that can count ...and those that can't!

apologies for previous response that must have caused upset, I'm just trying to get some help where ever I can, and it appears that whilst spending a small fortune on the system, it's not going to work......yet!0 -
Geo, will go through manual, and try and see where I get to. Thanks0

Another quick question. Have you got the weather compensation control? If so, what settings is it on?As Manuel says in Fawlty Towers: " I Know Nothing"0

Geo
Think so, but will have to contact Calorex tomorrow to confirm, so will reply then. Thanks0 -

I don't think your post needed an apology - I surmised that Graham2003 was agreeing with your last sentence.
Your system is yet another example of a system that isn't working correctly! There have been many posts on MSE and throughout the WWWeb of exactly that situation - not to mention the EST field trial. It really shouldn't be up to the end user to be struggling to understand if:
it is correctly installed?,
if it is faulty?
Are the settings correct etc.
You are fortunate to have people like Geotherm and Albyota who are in the business and prepared to help. However the Heat Pump manufacturers sell their products to any installer and then 'wash their hands' of any responsibility.

Frankly if I was unfortunate enough to have one of these systems that performed unsatisfactorily - and the installer/manufacturer wouldn't/couldn't put it right - I would sue them in the Small Claims Court for a system that was 'unfit for purpose'. That and the subsequent publicity might concentrate their minds and something might be done to end this disgraceful situation.0
