OR call yesterday - car being taken

  • So I'm really not sure what we should do. I'm really not happy to go and buy a "cheap banger". I dont see why I should have to when I have a car that I like and has all the bells and whistles I want. Also, the cars number plates ends in SZZ - my nickname is SAZ so even though it isn't - I've always considered it "personalised".

Perhaps because you are going bankrupt? And no, I'm not unsympathetic to your plight - I'm lurking on here as a close friend is going bankrupt in her late middle age; she's already lost her house, car, you name it, and it's too late for her to ever start again. But she has the huge blessing of a sense of perspective...

    Good luck.

I should say so for 1k you'll pick up a run around...sure its not got all the bells and whistles as you want but its better than nothing as some folk have

I can understand your frustrations BUT whoever you spoke to for advice before going bankrupt should have explained about the car beforehand

as others have said no 2 OR's offices work the same sadly so what one gets isnt always a guarantee someone else will...many more posters here have lost considerably more and managed to get through...mad as it sounds though i've seen everything from an OR taking a car worth 2k upwards to a motorbike in bits in someones garage worth a few hundred quid

OP, your husband is facing bankruptcy - it sounds really harsh, but you cannot expect to keep things, like the car, just for the sake of convenience. As others have said, some people lose their entire livelihood, house and all.

On the subject of buying an 'old banger'...I can heartily recommend a little 1.3 Ford Fiesta. You can get a decent, 8-9 year old for well under £1000. Everytime I have taken mine for a service my mechanic comments on how well built and hardy its little engine is. It's so cheap to run and to maintain - good fuel economy, great insurance group, low tax. A month ago I got two brand new front tyres for under £70. Mine is pretty basic - no central locking, no aircon, no alloys, but it's reliable, works everytime and is a perfect car for running errands about the city. I can fit into gaps that others can't :) Yet it still has standard safety features like ABS and airbags, and I regularly take it on long motorway journeys to see my family up north. You don't need anything with bells and whistles because you're just dropping off your child and heading to work.

Best of luck with it all, I hope it all works out for the best :)

  • Because they will probably be well accustomed to riding a bike in traffic and the op isnt. I tried it twice and ended up off the bike luckily fell onto the pavement and not onto the road with traffice zooming past. Bike buckled and myself well hurt.
You need some guts to use a bike on main roads these days and especially with a child onboard.
Doesnt matter who you know who does this they obviously have loads of bike skills.

  • OP - are you absolutely sure it will take you this long to gt to work on the bus? Have you checked out travel line and put your details in?

I'm only asking as I travel 27 miles a day to work on public transport ( I work in the middle of nowhere) and it only takes me an hour and half.

Could you get one bus and walk part of the way to save time?
  • I live 3 miles from town but it takes me 3/4hr on bus and thats the shortest bus route.

  • Seems to me the OP and the OR have locked horns over this and are never going to agree.

Best to draw a line by letting go of the car.

The OP is fortunate to have the option of buying another.
  • Joys of bankruptcy eh!!

I lost my car when I went bankrupt and to tell the truth it was the least of my worries. Just to have the worry of all that debt taken from my shoulders was worth losing the car and the inconvenience of having to rely on public transport.
Stop looking at the negatives and start looking at the positives. No more debt. No more worry over debt collectors.

Okay so its going to take longer to get places, and you will feel like you spend half your life standing at bus stops or on buses but that is a small price to pay really. Think of 'bus time' as quality time, you can read stories to your child or play games... things you cant do when you have to drive. You can budget easier as you dont have to worry about unexpected bills for the car or the fact that the mot is due and you havn't managed to save.

Think of it as a new start maybe? Start job hunting closer to home or look for part time work that is more suitable to your situation. Find ways to save money in your household budget from ideas on these forums.

AT the end of the day its just a car.
