Brought an Car which has had clock turned back , HELP

Hi can anyone please help me , i brought an used car today ( see my 2k thread) .
Let me first say that I have never brought an car before so did not know the procedure.

The car was supposed to be an private seller who had owned the car for 2 years and was selling as she had just brought an bigger car .

When i turned up she said to meet at her work were she was an secertary at an garage.

She originally said she had all the paperwork but when i turned up she said that she could not find it but would post it asap.

I paid £500 for the car thinking it was a fair price for an r reg 306 with 119000 on the clock and should last me around 12 months ,

When i got home i thought it best to check on the VOSA website , i got an shock to see that at the last MOT
Odometer reading: is 178,667 Milesthe last 3 Mots were done at the same garage as where picked it up.

so now not only do i feel stupid but also angry as the car could be dangerous.

Please any help would be appreciated

Take it back and ask for your money back. If she refuses and say it's sold as seen etc, park it on the main road outside the garage (make sure it's road legal) and plaster it with posters advising that you bought the car off the secretary at the garage and etc etc.
Just leave it parked up until she calls you offering to take it back as they're losing business.

When i got home lucklily i saved the original ad before they had an chance to delete it .

    It read

119,581 miles, 5 Door Hatchback, Green, Turbo Diesel, Manual, 119581 miles, power steering, central locking, front electric windows, full MOT, recent full service, new timing belt, very good runner & reliable, £650 or nearest offer. £650

I have just got off the phone to the seller , when i asked her politely what i had found she said that the clock had been changed (?) .

When i asked for a refund she said she would ask the guy selling it even though she said the car was hers.

  • Don't Autotrader have a thing about Traders pretending to be a private advertiser? Don't Traders have to have a 'T' in their advertisements? Maybe the threat of a complaint to the magazine might do you some good as it may stop them being allowed to adevertise in its pages again.

A "secretary" at a garage selling a car as a private individual. The one thing Trading Standards is really hot and good at is clocked cars from a garage. A phone call to them could result in the garage being given the fine toothcomb.

I'd be straight on the phone tomorrow and tell them no refund then you'll be reporting the garage she works at

i phoned her up and she said that she will refund me but was not too happy about as she said i had wasted her time . I have noticed that she had doctered to Mot when she went to get the road tax to say that the car was sold in march 2010 ( pre the clock being turned back ) .

She said she wants the green slip plus the mot ( i have copies ) , but how do i go about refunding the tax do i need any paperwork to do so?
  • Tell her that you want the Tax refunding as well. She knows very well that she's on a loser here and you must stand your ground and still threaten the above things unless she agrees. After all, she's now got a car with six or 12 month's tax on it.
