Stopping unwanted cats coming into my house

  • I am looking at getting a cat flap fitted but am worried about putting a collar on my cat as he has never had one (he is 6 years old). I have found online a company in Guernsey that sell cat flaps that will work with microchips. You programme your cat(s) to the catflap and it will only allow your cats to use it.

I had this problem many years ago when I was a student sharing a house. We arranged a large concrete slab to block the cat flap from outside when a string was pulled from the bedroom window. When we heard the cat chorus indoors, we pulled the string then went downstairs where the unwanted cat was trapped. After a few squirts of mustard and detergent we let it go. It didn't return.

    Absolutely brilliant !!!!!!!!!
Just hope the RSPCA dont read this board

Whilst I was in the vets the other week I overheard a conversation of a similar sort with a couple who were having problems with a cat getting into their house through their magnetic cat flap.

Their own cat had naturally gone territorial and was marking various spots in their house which wasn't very pleasant. The vet advised of a device they have - it's like a plug-in air freshner and it releases cat pheromones similar to that which a new-mother cat gives off. Apparently it makes the cat feel secure within their home environment, and less threatened. I think she mentioned that it also stops the other cats coming near as they sense that there is a new mother and steer clear. You don't smell anything as it's all to do with hormones so it wouldn't affect you or the people living in your home - it would just have an effect on the cats.

It may be worth popping into your local vets to enquire. Certainly more humane than some of the suggestions here...
  • I have the same problem with my two cats (one of whom lives with my neighbour!). There's a huge 'orrible dirty cat (not a stray I think, as he has a collar) who I've chased out of here loads - hissing, yelling, spraying with water etc - but still he returns! My cream carpets and sofa are suffering - and my poor moggy is a bit of a nervous wreck (he's always been soft).

I've tried the magnetic cat flaps in the past - regularly came home from work to find 2 or 3 extra cats in my old house!! The cat who lives next-door visits lots, but loses his collar every oither week, and is not chipped (you try catching a slippery little blighter who won't come within 6 feet of you!) My other cat lost his collar once - he must have been chased home by another moggy cos the loud clatter I heard at 3.00am was the whole cat flap forced out of the double glazed door and into the kitchen!!! (He's a big lad)
I think the next stop is infra-red or the micro-chip version - but looking at nearly £100 plus (not to mention getting someone in to replace the existing one in a DG door) - but I'm going to try all other suggestions on this post first!!

    Cheers everyone.

  • The spray/plug in thing you are on about is called 'Feliway' but TBH I haven't found that it does a whole lot.

I've tried it for stressed cats, and also on places where the little @###@**'s keep spraying () but they continue to spray there, and still be stressed!

It's very expensive too, but does come in a 'tester' size (although not free!) All good vets should sell it, but there is a website for it too if you do want to have a look. Can't rem the addy so just google 'feliway'.

As for the flaps, my MIL has just bought an infra red one and so far hasn't had any unwanted visitors, but it did cost £50 from Pets At Home.

    Decisions, decisions!

Why not invest in a collar triggered catflap, so only your cat can get in.
They come in magnetic (not powered) and powered versions.

    <snip>

We have a magnetic one and it works fine.

My magnetic catflap also worked fine until a certain dim stripey-Gee lost his collar (with the magnetic key attached) one night and proceeded to batter the flap open with his head. He was staggering and cross-eyed by the time I met him on the stairs. What's more he made it abundantly clear that his headache was ALL MY FAULT.
