Stopping unwanted cats coming into my house

I have a 3 year old little girl cat, but since my male cat died we have had a big ginger and white tom coming in at night, eating all her food!

last nite we had two male cats in (inc one of my neighbours cats) fighting in our dining room while we (my cat inc) were asleep in bed.

I dont know how to discourage these cats coming in! help!

  • We had to invest in a magnetic catflap as we had a tom spraying in the house. Was costing us a fortune in rug cleaning so worth the investment. Cheapest at Argos I think.
  • Hi,

We had a similar problem a few years ago - I take it these 'cat burglars' are coming into the house via a cat flap?

We replaced our cat flap with a magnetic one, and our cat wears a special magnet on his collar which unlocks the flap only to him. It sorted out the problem overnight.

Have a look on a site such as catflaps.com for some ideas

They now also have more sophisticated versions of this sort of catflap - infra-red, no less!
    Good luck!

  • I cant have a magnetic cat flap (i used to in my old house) as i had my cat flap fitted in my glass french door - had to spend a fortune having a new panel custom made. and they didnt do magentic ones! AHHHHHHH
  • We have the same problem - the only solution we have found is to lock the catflap at night, my cat is nearly 13 so sleeps most of the night anyway. During the day if I am here I unlock the flap for her but to be honest, she's so scared and timid that she rarely goes outside anyway now :( some days I have to escort her :rotfl:

Hope you find a solution, I was less bothered about other cats eating mine's dinner than I was about them spraying everywhere

We had the same problem. Getting a dog sorted it out very quickly although I suspect it's a bit extreme though if you don't particularly want a dog. :rotfl:
My Doctor told me that "1 out of 3 people who start smoking will eventually die." The other two apparently became immortal.

We've had the same problem. It was alright when the cat was younger-all the other cats were scared of him but he's over 18 now and really just wants a quiet life. He refuses to wear a collar so we've had to shut him in at night. Fortunately we have two cat flaps- one from outside into the garage and one from the garage into the house. We leave a litter tray in the garage ,which we cover during the day, and just block the door to the outside.
  • Block the cat flap so your cat can get out of the house but no cat can get in.............when you bought the flap it would have come in two parts - the door itself plus a barrier to pull down over the flap to close it completely. I have done this myself and it works but means that your poor moggy is meowing at the door most of the night trying to get in but worth a try!!!!!
  • Sounds like your kitchen is quite the party venue for local felines.
Lock your cat inside for a couple of nights with a litter tray, and place a shallow container of water ( baking tray is good) on the inside of the cat flap. Also move the food somewhere else not in view ( or smell) of the catflap.Shut the internal door to the room that the cat flap opens into.
Keep a wooden spoon and pot nearby so if you hear any strangers inside yo can go roaring in making lots of nopise. A couple of encounters like this should sort out the riff raff.
You can also get magnetic cat flps that only work if the cat approaching has a magnet on their collar but that depends on whether or not your cat will tolerate a collar.

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: You should see the mental picture I've got of this! Brilliant!

Good bit about the water near the cat flap too - I've got 12 cats of my own (no, that wasn't a typo! ) so all the local moggies seem to think I'm a cattery and pop in for a snack whenever they feel like it! And my lot just lie there all fat and lazy and let them get on with it!

I have been armed with a water sprayer in the past...that does the trick sometimes... :D
