Young children may be able to read this forum but this forum is not targetted towards them. Most of the advice, and even the discussions here, are designed for adults, not children.
Why should adults be forced to censor their behaviour to protect children from the sight of naughty words? It is up to the parents of the child to ensure that their Internet browsing is monitored and the sites that they are visiting is suitable. This nanny state "Won't someone pleeease think of the children!" nonsense is getting, quite frankly, ridiculous. I should not have to modify my behaviour to cater to rubbish parenting.0 -

For info, I also reported Puliptears post as well.
My young son was not at school today due to a cold. I let him browse the pets forum on MSE especially as he likes the pictures of the pets that people sometimes post and also because we have a youg puppy at the moment. I also thought that MSE was a safe environment for him to look at stuff on the pet forum.
I was horrified when he showed me the post with the expletive in. I had to explain to him in length that teachers don't swear and, if they did, he must advise me or his dad immediately.
I am a good parent, regularly monitor what he is doing and looking at on the internet. However, I have never seen such words or the like in any thread on the pet forum.
People should be ashamed of themselves.:)Have a beer! :beer:0 -

It still isn't a forum targeted at children though, is it?
There's plenty of other pet forums, with many, many more pictures that get posted of people's pets than this one that also have a more family-friendly community.
Sure, you can argue that certain language isn't appropriate but it is par for the course on a forum where people expect that those who are also using the forum are adults.
Let's be frank here - the Pet Forum here is a sub-forum of the Marriages and Relationships board where conversations include subjects such as sex, drug use, alcohol abuse, domestic violence and other such subjects that people may want young children protected from. At any time on this Pets forum, you are one click away from that board. Nobody is suggesting that a post laden with profanity is acceptable but people are right in thinking that such discussions do foster an environment that should allow adults to be adults and sometimes adults swear.
Children also swear, at length, in the playground and to their friends and I'm willing to wager a few teachers swear in private conversations and in an environment where they're not dealing with children.
If you're allowing your child to peruse a board belonging to a website where the content is exclusively aimed at adults then you shouldn't be too alarmed when somebody uses an "adult" word.0 -
Tropez, that was put beautifully and succinctly
You have summarised perfectly my thoughts.
Allow me to put it another way0 -
One thing also occurs to me - if someone were allowing their child to browse this forum because they like looking at pictures of people's pets, why would they be allowing them to read a thread with the title "Should I contact the RSPCA?" which in itself suggests some form of animal cruelty is taking place? I'm not sure that is going to encourage an ill, animal loving child to feel much better.0

Possibly so. I know if I were a parent I wouldn't feel comfortable with a young child who by the sounds of it is sensitive reading this forum. What about that link someone posted just a few days ago to the individual who feeds kittens to snakes and drowns cats as well? I seem to recall the link provided contained graphic images of the kitten's demise and where to find the video as well!
Surely that would be much more disturbing than a couple of naughty words?
I remember, when I was a kid, watching a film... something to do with otters but I forget the name of it, I couldn't have been more than 8... anyway, someone put a spade through an otter (not in real life, just in the story) and I was very upset by this and it was purely fictionalised. I'd say the fact that I can remember that scene, around twenty years later, even though I cannot recall much else from the film, shows how big of an effect that had... can't remember where I first heard a naughty word though.0
