we used to get 2p a paper to deliver the free papers door to door, and generally i think was around 80p per 100 leaflets that had to go into the papers, but with leaflets and samples some weeks we got 15 quid for a 250 door round

I may be in the minority here, but at 13 I wouldn't let my child work in all weathers/dark nights/mornings for that amount of money.

    It's only 2.5 hours a week!

if he earns £8 for 2 1/2 hrs well thats £6.50 more than he gets off me and the time it takes him to earn that pocket money probably is about 2 - 2 1/2 hrs :rotfl:

wow! thanks everyone for your responses. I was really cross when I posted last night and have calmed down now. It is a free paper , the woman was very vague about wages saying it depends on the weight of the paper plus leaflets. The minimum it could be is £5 but probably will reach £8 with leaflets.
I spoke to my daughter about it and she is keen to do it -I can't knock her for that I'm proud that she wants to earn some money. We will just see how it goes. I will go with her as I don't want her out on her own after dark.

2.5 hours in darkness, and all weathers. I would prefer they were doing a sport or even just relaxing with a book. Each to their own.;)

I had 2 paper rounds at that age. One morning round - it had less houses but more streets (quite a lot of distance). It would take me at least half an hour every week day morning and around and hour and a half on Sat and Sun. It got me £14 per week.

The other one was a weekly free newspaper, It took around four hours to deliver but I used to have to fill the papers with leaflets, that would take a couple of hours the previous evening. Depending on how many leaflets there were I would get anywhere between £15 and £45

Looking back I think it was really worth while. It taught me about the value of work and it gave me pocket money (my parents couldn't afford it so they didn't give us any). I could afford to go out with my friends if I wanted to and best of all - my parents could complain about what I spent MY money on :)

I used to pass a primary school in a quiet road in a peaceful prosperous village each day on my way to work.

Year by year it got more and more difficult to get to work as the road was gridlocked by doubtless well intentioned parents who drove their children a few hundred yards or less in their Chelsea Tractors.

Seems to me a mixture of hysteria, affluence and wild over protection was not always in the child's best interest.

And that relates to my comment how?

My friends son did a daily paper round and earned about £20 a week to start with. He was paid per paper delivered and was very happy with his income.
He ended up giving up though as the number of people wanting papers delivered dropped dramatically as a special offer came to and end and so his income dropped a lot too.
He did enjoy working over Christmas though as a lot of people gave him great tips.
Didn't pity his mum though who would take him out most nights to the streets he needed to go to.
