A few years ago, my DD was paid something similar - £10 a week for 2hrs a day - 7 days a week. She wanted the money though so plowed on. Until Feb came and a lot of snow. She still delivered all the papers that week despite the snow and other staff not even turning up etc but some papers she delivered were late (due to the snow she was treking through) so she was paid £1.50 for that weeks work.
Proud of her though - she told the shopkeeper herself that she was quiting and why. And she managed it without a single rude word, but a lot of tears when she came home.0 -
I may be in the minority here, but at 13 I wouldn't let my child work in all weathers/dark nights/mornings for that amount of money.0

Sorry, I read this as a 2.5 hour once a week free paper type delivery: around here they are done every Thursday.
1 x 2.5 hours for £8.00, yes. 12.5 hours for £8.00, no."On behalf of teachers, I'd like to dedicate this award to Michael Gove and I mean dedicate in the Anglo Saxon sense which means insert roughly into the anus of." My hero, Mr Steer.0 -
hi,
My daughter has just turned thirteen and has got herself a paper round to earn extra money. The round includes four different roads with a total of 225 houses.I am really proud of her for sorting it all and wanting to work, however the agent has just dropped off forms to fill out for wages and they are paying her ..£8 on a good week!!!! this could go down if paper is lighter or lower still if no leaflets. The four roads will take her at least 2 1/2 hours. This doesn't seem a lot for the work she is expected to do...am I being unreasonable??
many thanks,
Casey
I used to be a supervisor for a newspaper. It was my remit to employ kids, sort their rounds, pay them etc.
My son also used to cover 2 routes for me and he also had a separate route got through the local newsagent when he delivered the nationals.
In all cases, payment criteria depended on amount of houses, whether payment for the papers was collected or not, how many days a week delivery was made.
Imo, £8 is a bit low for delivery to 225 houses if it's once a week. It's ridiculously low if it's for delivery several times a week.
The unfortunate thing is that is may be a case of put up and shut up. If she doesn't do it, another kid will. Depends on how desperate she is for cash.
Is it a free paper or a paid for? If it's a paid for, then she may find she makes up her money with tips. A lot of the customers my lot used to deliver to, made a fair bit once their tips were added to their wage. Most people wont tip for a free paper though.Herman - MP for all!0 -
£3.20 an hour...at 13...I'd do it.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

As others have pointed out, fatal risk is not worth any price, At 13 I had a paper round, was £4.50 a week, and the older folk thought I was on megabucks, that was around the time that Carl Bridgewater was found on that farm :eek:0 -
I think £8 is a fair price (for one delivery of 225 papers) and I wouldn't mind my child doing one for some pocket money/independance
When I was young my paper round was £1 a round per day no matter what 'round' you got. I did 7 streets approx 35 local papers 7 days a week. It generally took 2 hours but sometimes I did it in 1.5hours. On a saturday I got £7 plus I got to read the paper for free every night :rotfl: I was one of the lucky ones though as myr ound started from the paper shop (outside school) and ended in my own road and I didn't have to bring my paper bag back to the shop like everyone else had to0 -
Id be happy that my child was getting financial independance more than worrying about whether it was for fair pay at that rate
That sounds like a free paper, all the houses will be next to each other. Theres nothing to say she couldnt do it quicker than that anyway
Of course, she does have to take it0
