Rules are there to be broken, however in the case of breaking the law, my concerns would be insurances etc for employees without permits. We are actually talking about child safety here!

Whether on not a 13 year old can do a paper round without a work permit is actually a by-law matter for local authorities so can vary from area to area.

Presumably the newsagent will have employer's liability insurance (a legal requirement) so that is not an issue.

i'm not sure how having insurance has any bearing on child safety either. does having insurance scare rapists, muggers and murders? and does it put a protective bubble around you so cars don't knock you off your bike?

So insurance has bugger all to do with child safety, it just means they're not financially screwed IF they have an accident.

    hi,
My daughter has just turned thirteen and has got herself a paper round to earn extra money.

I think this is the key point.

You should be congratulating her for wanting to earn her own money, she'll soon figure out if she thinks it's worth it, to her, or not.

For those of you yelling about the hourly rate...... are you aware that work apprentices under 18 are paid the princely sum of £2.50 per hour? Yes, it shocked me too.

I'll be honest when i was 13 I had 2 paper rounds, 1 was the weekly paper for my street that I got £3 odd for and the other was a 6 day a week one that I biked to town for and delivered to the streets on the way back to my home, every thursday I was given a money bag and had to knock the doors for payment for the paper, if I didn't get the money by saturday I didnt get paid for that person. So my money was a maximum of about £5.50 but could drop to nothing if no-one was home. Every friday night you could find me in my room counting out all the money I had collected and making sure it matched the total of the bill, because if it didnt, I was docked the difference. Thinking about it now 20 years later that was a bit rubbish but at the time I was just really pleased to earn my own money.

My DS is about to turn 11 and is already asking me about getting a paper round, when he turns 13 he will be more than welcome too and if he earns £8 for 2 1/2 hrs well thats £6.50 more than he gets off me and the time it takes him to earn that pocket money probably is about 2 - 2 1/2 hrs :rotfl:

I think that's reasonable although I don't know why it should go up or down for amounts to be delivered she still covers the same round, when I did mine I had a morning, evening and sunday morning round, eventually getting the shortest round, so that any spare rounds going I could get back to the shop to do them, I cant remember what I was paid as it was in the days of the old pounds shillings and pence.

You are right to be proud of her at least she is getting off her backside and not relying on the bank of mum and dad for cash, well done to her.

It's £2.50 regardless of age in the first year.
I'm on just over £3 and I'm 20 and in my second year but apparently I'm not actually an apprentice. Don't understand it myself but I need the money, I'm getting valuble work experience and I can't get a job anywhere else

I did the weekly one when I was younger, over 300 houses I believe. The leaflets were a pain to sort out, however at Christmas there were often lots of leaflets which meant I got paid more, and I remember being paid around £20 for 1 week once! At 14 that can seem a fortune :) I rarely got paid the 'basic rate' as there were always leaflets.

I did a paper round in the mid 80's and got paid not much more than £5 a week. The was for around 110 houses, 4 mornings a week. It was a free paper. Took me no more than an hour and it was on a main road, so there were lots of people about at that time of the morning.

I thought it was great and I did it over Xmas, so I got lots of tips!

I did a paper round delivering the free papers ten years ago. I think my basic pay was around £12 a week but with the leaflets I usually got between £17 and £25 a week. I had a huge round though, at least 500 houses. I struggled to get it all done in the week, especially as they were delivered to me on the Monday and I had to get them out by the Friday. Not a lot of time to stuff them and deliver them. It paid for my horse riding lessons though.

I'd say it is a fair amount, and if she is doing the free papers she should get more for the leaflets.
At the end of the day it is up to her. Let her have that independence and make her own mind up. She will know if she wants to do that amount of work for the money she gets, it's not as if she actually needs the money.
