asking cat rescue for "dontation" back?!

Hi all we're getting a kitten this weekend from a friend's litter and the other was coming from a cat rescue place. We got a cat from them a couple of months ago but he had to go back as he was too aggressive. We then decided kittens would make sense and decided on a kitten instead from the same rescue place. we had to wait at least another 3 weeks until he was ready and in that time decided to get a kitten from my friend to be a companion for the rescue kitten.
In this time the rescue kitten got cat flu and when i phoned to enquire they said it would be best not to bring him home until the kitten from my friend has been vaccinated against cat flu. So i was expecting them to keep the rescue kitten until then. i then ended up in a bit of an argument with the centre as they changed their mind and wanted him to go NOW as he was feeling a bit better. in the end we agreed i'd have another kitten nearer to christmas, she assured me lots more would be coming into the centre.
So i was a bit gutted about not getting the one we chose as i was already attached! but needs must, i didn't want there to be any risk of my other kitten getting cat flu. Anyway i enquired today about kittens and they won't have any ready for another month at least.
However, my friend has a kitten from the same litter that still needs a home. I don't have enough spare money to just forget about the £75 we gave to the centre and buy another kitten from my friend, or to be honest thats what i would do. this is because I don't want the kitten i'm getting from my friend this weekend to be alone for too long, yet my funds for getting him another companion are tied to the rescue centre. what do i do?!

You have committed to getting a rescue kitten so that's what you do. If you can't afford £75, then how are you going to afford to pay for vaccinations and neutering of your friend's kitten, never mind the second one!
If your friend was so irresponsible not to get her cat neutered then she must deal with the consequence of the kittens - the rescue have already had you returning one cat, and now you are messing them about again! These cats are not electrical goods to be returned on a whim!0 -

I can afford to feed, worm, vaccinate etc. my dogs but I would miss £75 if I had nothing to show for it!
OP paid £75 for a rescue kitten, the kitten has become ill and the rescue aren't willing to wait a reasonable time to prevent OP's other cat getting ill, I think she's within her rights to ask for her donation back. If she just wanted to donate £75 to the cat rescue for Christmas, fair enough, but she gave it as a donation fee for a cat that she hasn't got, and the rescue don't have any other kittens to offer her.
Whether OP decides to buy another kitten off her friend is another matter. I don't necessarily agree with it but I don't know enough about OP's friend to make a judgement on that.0 -
wow! back up you don't even know me. Firstly they asked me to bring back the first cat, as he was attacking other cats and men violently.
I can afford everything to do with the other kitten and have already booked the vet's appointments. as its nearly christmas i'm saying i don't have a "spare" £75 to just leave the donation with them and spend out on another kitten. Her cat got pregnant after someone else let her out when they were not supposed to - hardly her fault. and she has been responsible getting good homes for them and paying out for their wellbeing in the mean time.
Also i'm looking for advice not to be attacked, let me tell you the reason i argued with the centre is because the owner was trying to force a kitten on me that had cat flu into a household with a kitten who was too young to yet be vaccinated and would therefore get severe cat flu - they were irresponsible in that and our agreement was that I would take another kitten when the time was right to reduce the risk to my kitten who i did not want to get cat flu.
I have other pets and I am very responsible, I see animals as a part of my family not electrical goods, which is why I want another kitten asap to be a companion to my kitten - rather than taking the rescue place's advice and just waiting for a suitable kitten to come along with them - this could mean months of my kitten being alone which i do not want. this is me looking out for the needs of the kitten nothing to do with myself.
I suggest you think before you attack people you know nothing about in future, an opinion or advice is fine - but that was just uncalled for!0 -

thank you! exactly the kind of response i was looking for. I don't want this to seem like "i paid for goods i don't have" as animals are not "goods" in that sense. hopefully my other long post just cleared this all up. I don't even agree with "buying" animals, i'm helping a friend out - not buying from a breeder etc - which is something i don't agree with. Basically the rescue place are trying to fob me off and have had suitable kittens they have given to other people - who i've been told "donated more". its got to this point after months of issues, i'm not the one being awkward. all your negative posts make me think i will just wait rather than try and have this conversation with them! even if my kitten will be lonely in the mean time - yes he will have us but i think kittens need other kittens personally!0 -
How much are you paying your friend for the kitten?
If you're taking one (and have paid for it) can they not give you the other one knowing that it's going to a good home?
Re the rescue - difficult one but on the basis that your donation was in return for a cat / kitten which you've not got - and which they can't provide, I would be looking for the donation to be returned.Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)

thank you I do agree but not sure how to broach the subject with the rescue centre and also with my friend. When i go to pick the first one up on saturday i'll enquire then i think and see how the land lies! i think she just needs to cover the costs so far in food etc shes asking for £40 per kitten, which I think is about fair. I may just have to dig deep and consider having the awkward conversation with the rescue centre in the new year about getting my money back. If i could leave it with them I would - maybe in the new year i'll feel better about it all and want to leave it with them even if i do get my kitten a pal elsewhere!0

Aaah yet another "I'm right, tell me I'm right - I'm right honest" thread

Get your friend to donate the kitten to the rescue centre, then ask them again if they've got any in stock.
Everyone's happy!
