I know gold isnt cheap. but Yellow gold does not suit either of us, 'White' gold needs to be replated and works out very expensive in the long run.

Since her engagement ring is platinum i would like to get her ring in the same material... mine im not too fussed about, but must match hers.

Im just wondering who told you that about the white gold? White gold is coated in rhodium and it should only cost you about £20 (if that) to get it recoated, and you only need to do it every few years. So it does not work out more expensive because platinum can cost £100s more for the same ring!!

One jeweller told my friend she should change her white gold ring to a platinum version because shed need to pay £50 to get it recoated -every 6 months! That is just a lie to get people to spend more. Unfortunately her fiance fell for it and forked out an extra £700! I could get my ring recoated 35 times for that!

So if you want a 'silver' looking ring just get a white gold one. Or you could get palladium. My wedding ring is white gold and my DH got palladium and it looks just like platinum but its cheaper.

Also, if you get platinum scratched its much harder to get out. If you scratch a white gold ring you can get it out by getting it polished and recoated.

The theory is that both rings should be made of the same material. Platinum is much harder than gold or silver so it will wear away a gold or silver ring worn next to it.

If you are only going to wear one ring it doesn't matter. If you aren't going to wear any ring it matters even less. :p

My engagement was(is!) platinum - we didn't give any thought at all to buying wedding rings when we bought it!

We went along to the jewellery quarter in Birmingham and spoke to a lot of shops. We eventually went to Neweys and spoke to a very helpful guy in there. I ended up with a palladium ring as it is similar in composition to platinum (you can't tell the difference looking at it) and mine cost the princely sum of £88!!! (3 years ago)

Hubby designed his ring and they made it for him - his is made from titanium and cost around £200 (much thicker than mine)

  • Platinum is going to cost a lot, sadly, as the price of it is so high at the moment. Palladium would be a good match, and a bit cheaper, though.

I have platinum engagement & wedding rings, and I love them. They are also very tough indeed.

I think its boiling down to Mrs SB will get a platnum ring to match her engagement ring. I Mr SB will get a palladium ring as its a few hundred quid cheaper...

    Although... i did spot this...
now would anyone buy a ring from amazon ? Its basically a few quid more than palladium and is 4mm wide.

See post #3 ;) I've got my mothers' platinum wedding ring, it's octagonal in shape and is nearly 70 years old!! The engagement ring is gold, but with platinum "shoulders" holding the diamond.

Yes, I would. I've bought all sorts of things from Amazon, including jewellery, it's all been good, with no problems.
