Advice: Late for work/working it back

This week I'm on a late shift of 11:30 - 8pm... To ensure I get there on time due to rubbish bus service I have to set off at about 10am, this gets me there at 10:45. This morning I went out in time and the bus didn't turn up, after half hour of waiting I went back in home and rang work to inform them of the situation and said I'd be on the 11am bus which will see me late for work by about 15minutes.
After 20 minutes went back out for the next bus, after waiting for half an hour again it became obvious yet again the bus wasn't here, however this time I saw one going the opposite way which at least meant there would be a bus at 12, so I go back in and ring work to inform them.

This time I go out even earlier just to be on the safe side, and sure enough the bus turns up about a minute late as it generally does. I get into work at 12:45.

Now I've gained no benefit from this whatsoever, I am more than willing to make the time back up.

Work have informed me that they will let me work it back tomorrow by starting at 10:15, this means setting off at about 8:50 and getting home at about 9:45, I proposed working 40 mins on my dinner today and 45 minutes before my shift tomorrow, or over the next two days prior to my shift start.

They declined both as it's their policy (despite this never been communicated to us verbally or in written) to do it on the next day if you're on a late shift.

They are not up for any discussion on this and told me I have to be in work tomorrow at 10:15.

Is there nothing I can do on this score?

I'm contemplating writing a grievance and explaining the situation, I'm currently on anti depressants for migraines (amitrypacline or something like that) meaning when I pop one of them tonight after work they make me tired, meaning it'll be hard enough getting up tomorrow morning and I've read they make you feel like you've got an hangover if you don't get enough sleep, I've had no benefit from being late and am being reasonable with the offer of making the time back, there is absolute no bearing on business need for me to make it back when they have requested it is clearly just a stamp of authority.

  • If they change the rules for you, they change the rules for everyone - this is the business case for not allowing your request.

Why not speak to the doctor about changing your meds? There are lots of migraine meds available that do not cause drowsiness.

That's the thing, there were not any rules set out, I've been here 8 weeks and seen nothing of the sort.

I only got the meds on Friday, there would be no issue with them working a normal set of hours.

There are other people who are late and haven't had to make the time back as it's gone un noticed.

A request of doing it over two days is not unreasonable considering the travelling I have to do to get here.

  • I can still see their point of view - they want to get it out of the way, allowing you to spread it out over different days means someone has to keep checking up on you.

If you have only been there eight weeks it would be very foolish to start rocking the boat. Can you not just do it for the sake of one long day?

I have had nothing but stress this morning, having to wait out in the freezing cold as well, now I feel like I'm being punished for things out of my control, I'm not even trying to get out of the time, but I'm already !!!!ed off with my travelling to work time when we have these !!!! shifts.

I'm hardly being unreasonable asking for it to be spread over 2 days as oppose to one day. Coming from an MI Analyst as that is a job I have done before, then I can not see where the issue arises from me doing it over two days, there isn't a business need for me to do it as we don't have a large amount of work at the moment, the call centre is very quiet.

Wouldn't mind in between calls I'm building them an entire spreadsheet that manages outbound dialling, this is something I've offered to do as I've done it before, I don't have to do this and I did it to help them out. I'm so !!!!ed off! I hate where I live but am not in a position to change it.

This is the reason I've had so many jobs, it's always around public transport :(

  • Now you're just whinging. Simple advice is, suck it up and get on with it. You're creating barriers that do not exist, and if you carry on like this you'll be out of a job again pretty soon.

    No they don't!

I'm not saying they should or that they will but they can discriminate in any way they like (positive or negative) as long as it is not for one of the handful of reason proscribed by law!

I would also ring the bus company and complain to them! They may compensate you enough to pay for a cab one morning!

You need to get a mobile phone and ring the bus company as soon as it's 5 minutes late then give it to them. They'll call the bus driver and find out where she/he is and advise you on the phone. At least that's what my bus company does then they post it on Facebook for all who are waiting to see before they ring. At the very least subscribe to the bus company Facebook page and check any updates before you leave home. i.e last Saturday....from the bus company...
Saturday 3rd December - traffic is very bad everywhere so buses might be delayed. Just had a message from a driver "It is a car park".

    and this from this morning
We currently can't serve Middleton Top on sixes 6.1 or Taddington & Chelmorton on transpeak due to icy conditions. Delays possible on both routes. Thanks for bearing with us
