If you are near the top end of Tottenham Court Road or heading to Euston Station then a regular Lunch stop for me is Rasa Express - turn left along Euston Road at the end of Tottenham Court Road or after exiting Warren Street Tube. Rasa Express is painted pink around 200 yards on your left. It's basic inside but they do Indian Meal Boxes like served on the Indian Trains - free water or you can buy soft drinks. They do a vegetarian box for £3.50 and Chicken or Chicken Biryani for £4:00.

The boxes contain 2 curries, rice, bread, vegetarian side dish and a pudding for that incredibly low price. You can eat in at formica tables or take it away and eat on the train on the way home (which is what I do).

The cooking is Keralan and the meals are cooked at another restaurant and then kept hot on water baths - apparently Jamie Oliver takes his mates to the actual restaurant to show off to his mates! The food is lovely using fresh ingredients and tastes unlike other Indian food you may have tried before.

    Rasa Express, 327 Euston Rd, NW1 3AD (7387 8974/www.rasarestaurants.com). Warren St tube.

Try the Hare Krishna place in Soho.

Walking past the Universities near Euston the other day there was a huge queue of students who looked like they were lining up for FREE vegetarian food from a Hare Krishna guy!

there's a Turkish restaurant called Troia which is just opposite the entrance to County Hall Premier inn round the corner from the London eye. we ate twice there with our kids when we went to london in May at lunchtime when they do 2 course for something like £5 or £6. Lovely food and really fresh tasting.
