    I've just planted;
Spinach type stuff (Leaf beat or something??), lettuce - cos and rocket - in a grow bag, and 1 each of tomato, pepper, courgette and squash in 2 large containers.

    Wish me luck!!

I have got some Spinach - Leaf Beet to plant too, has anyone else tried it? Is it just like spinach? Sorry if that sounds like a dumb question.

I've a question - does anyone know how long it takes for chilli's to turn red? I've had lots of green chilli's on my plants for around a week now, but they're not showing any signs of turning red, even in this hot weather! Any help is much appreciated! :)

Mine took about three weeks, from memory, perhaps a bit longer. I do recall thinking that it took a long time.

I can let you know how long next year's crop takes :)

If you'd like to check out the gardening threads which are in the organics/grow your own bit, somewhere in there is a link to a good site which tells you all about what to plant when. Have a browse around the whole grow your own part because there's loads of good stuff there.

You can find Organics in our "Indexed Collections" sticky at the top of the forum listing, or you can follow the clue in my signature any time you see it or...

..you can use the Indexed Collections link in the Blue Bar at the top of every page which looks something like this:-

  • Swiss chard can be treated like a spinach only its a bit more chewy, try cooking it in a quiche with swiss cheese eg emmental or gruyere

Just a bit of feedback on what's being eaten from my garden at the moment... meaning money savings, too!

Last night we had our first new potatoes. There was only 300g, in a builder's bucket, enough for two generous portions, with our quiche. They're King Edwards, and the foliage of the plant had died prematurely when we were on holiday and had a heatwave a couple of weeks ago. But I thought I'd check for spuds, and there they were, like little gold nuggets! You can't go wrong with spuds, I'm finding! Organic, of course...saving at least 79p on the shops, I reckon, for local organic...

We've had about eight portions of strawberries from my alpine strawberries. The other type haven't done very well, but the alpine ones are soft and flavoursome, and just keep coming! The birds haven't cottoned on to them yet. We haven't bought any strawberries from the shops this year (but the clotted cream has to be bought!...). Not sure the saving on this.

Lettuce; all starting to bolt, but still tasty, and I need to sow more at the weekend. My boyfriend washed and bagged loads to take home with him for the week, saving him about £1.15. There are still plenty more to be eaten, so there will be a weekly saving on this for a while.

Camomile and peppermint. This is my boyfriend's, as he drinks herbal teas daily. These two plants are saving him about £2 a week on teabags. He also uses the lemon balm and lemon verbena, also saving money on shop-bought.

Basil, I only use a little, and have kept a supermarket plant alive outside for a couple of months so far, and still thriving. Likewise parsley from a farmer's market.

So, we're doing okay! I'm sure there is some beetroot ready, more lettuce. Unfortunately the cabbage is being eaten, but one I left in from last year, hoping it would go to seed, has instead become a whole new cabbage, untouched by pests so far!!

Oh, and the garlic is all pulled and dried. I think that will last til the end of the year, a good saving on the shops, too!

With the money I've spend on compost and seeds, there probably isn't a net saving, but as it's my hobby, the spending is fine by me, as it's still relatively cheap over the year, and it does bring the grocery bill down a little. I can't wait for the tomatoes to get going! Still at flower stage...

Hope your gardens are all growing well!

My chilli's are doing well, loads of flowers that are now dying and turning into chilli's.

Tomatoes are doing well too, loads of flowers and some green toms.

Potato foliage is starting to wilt a little now, so I think it's nearly time to pull them up.

Courgettes are doing well, enough to stop me from buying.

Lettuce not done very well, just doesn't seem to grow very well.

Planted a small row of carrots and 2 have grown! Pulled one up yesterday, it was white and hairy - not very carrot-like at all!

I planted a clove of garlic ages ago. I read that when the green top starts to die off, it's time to harvest. Pulled it up yesterday and ..... I got a clove of garlic with roots!

Any idea what's gone wrong with the carrot and garlic?
